Micklesons Landing before the warm up?
« on: Dec 24, 2006, 10:41 PM »
I was just curious if anyone was able to get out on Micklesons, or Mallard bay before everthing melted again?
If so, besides the usual Bluegills, any luck with the Yellow Perch there? We use to hammer the Perch on the south end of Micklesons around Duck hunting season.

I probably should have posted this in the Il. forums. Sorry about that?

Hey Riverbottoms- I met you on the hard water last year in the Willow Slough area in Clinton. You gave myself and my brother-in-law some great tips. Thanks!! As far as the Micklesons thing goes, there were a fair amount of people out there. Lots of dinks, as I heard it. I did, however, hear that people were getting out on the South lake in Sabula, fishing the channel edges and getting some 10.5" crappies. That was from a reliable source, too. I work with the lady in the ER at the hospital! By the way, my in-laws must really like me- I got a brand new Vex for Christmas ! Anyway, hope to see you out there soon.
When is this water gonna freeze!?!

Thanks for the reply on Micklesons Moondog440.
I hope to make it back home sometime in mid Jan. or mid Feb. for week or so. Glad to hear you got a Vexilar for christmas, YOU WILL LOVE IT!
Drop me a PM whenever you get ice out there.
BTW if you like your crappie fishing give East Clinton a try, but only after real good ice. That backwater area is notorious for springs and thin spots.
I would highly suggest a life jacket, picks, and a spud bar when fishing there.
You talked about the south lake at sabula?
If you fish it, try fishing the weeds that run closes to the channel edges.
And don't walk the cut between the islands to the middle lake, always thin ice there.

Hey Riverbottoms! I got your PM today and really wanted to say "thanks" for the knowledge. I am trying to find out how in the heck to PM you back, but I seem to be having a problem figuring that out. I'll get it soon. I will try to get an email to you to discuss some of the things you talked of. I am looking forward to learning some of the "tricks" of using a Vex!
I went out with my brother inlaw today to look at where we SHOULD be ice fishing- it was kinda sad. We checked out the Camanche Harbor and there was a guy sitting on one of the slip fingers, jigging in the open water. Looked slow to me. I almost went home and got the boat and looked for a wing dam. Anyway, everywhere we went was wide open and all of them had sad looking ice fishermen checking things out. Hope it gets solid soon! Talk to you later!

South Sabula has a deep hole in the Middle. My brother is rehabbing an old house in Sabula,so I plan on making it a regular hangout if we get some friggin' ICE.
Last year I caught 9 different species out of one hole.
Can any of you guys get a report about Mickelson's .
It unusually freezes up first.I'll give up some other good backwater spots if you can keep me updated!
