« on: Jan 17, 2007, 09:16 AM »

I know of a crappie and panfish bonanza less than 15 minutes from Ames.  Here's the deal:

I give you directions and I'll meet you there.  You must wear all black and gold, learn the words and sing the Hawkeye fight song.  Admit that Jason Berryman deserved to go to jail and it was a mistake to let him back in the team after the first infraction.  Furthermore, you must give 2 page essays on "Why ISU Will Always be Little Brother to U of I in athletics" and "VEISHA...More Than Burning Cars!"   Then I'll get you on fish....LOL  ;D

My bro is down around that area...I emailed him for where he's been going.  I know of one lake that is good for 'eyes but it's a drive.  If you are going to school the way I did...gas money is precious so you prob don't want to burn up good beer money.  I'll let you know what's up when he gets back to me.

There is a little known honey hole just outside of town.  Talk to someone in fisheries biology.  There is a small body of water north of town that the University uses for fish stocking and reproduction studies.  At one point it was full of white bass and walleyes.  I’d tell you the exact directions, but I can’t remember.  It does involve going through a gate and there are certain hours it can be accessed.  Other than that, there have been decent pannies in Little Wall and Hickory Grove.  Good fishing!

Bro emailed me back:

Said he was riding his sled out at Big Creek (near Ankeny area I assume - that's where he lives).  Stopped and talked to a guy on the ice.  Said he watched the guy pull 4 sweet 'eyes through the ice in about 20 minutes.  Why he didn't go home and grab the auger I have no idea.  But the guy told him there were really on the bite.  That's all he knew.  Sorry I couldn't tell you more...

Well Thanks for the help on big creek i know its somewhere it polk county i guess. I live in ankeny also.  I hate the cyclones!!!!! I'd rather be a hawkeye but there is no architectural design program at Iowa so here I stay in ames.  if anyone has any other ideas that would be great.  I'm off to home on saturday to grab my tent and heater and fish finder.  Then probably monday or tuesday night its on depending on work.  Hopefully monday so i can be out for like ten hours or so maybe.  We'll see but right now I've heard of brushy creek and big creek.  ;D  preciate all the help you guys have given me.  maybe see ya out on the ice.  I wear bright  orange coat and bibbs  i'll be all over till theres no ice now.  Any more info let me know and i'll keep some fish stories going on this forum if i get into them...

Hey I'm an ISU student as well and I know of a lake or i should say rock quarry just on the north end of town.  Has nice sized crappies out there, but b/c DNR regulations the limit is 5/day.  They have nice bass in the lake too but they are catch and release only.  Cats have some size to them as well.  Don Williams by Ogden, hickory grove, little wall, and many more lakes in the area.  There's quite a bit of water around this area, so maybe I'll see you out there sometime.

definately hit hickory grove. there are some nice panfish out there. there is a small pond south of 20 towards cambridge. lots of small crappies, you might find some keepers. peterson pits and mc farland park are easy to get to, but i never had alot of luck there. little wall has tons of small perch, but you will have a hard time getting half a limit of keepers. you will get some cats, and they are a fun surprise
