Rope lights for shanty
« on: Dec 21, 2006, 07:47 AM »
I was at Gander Nountain over the weekend and come across led rope lights for my shanty at a more reasonable price than sold anywhere else I could find them ($14.00). I was wondering has anyone here tried them if so what do you think of them?

I hate rope lights. I would rather use a propane lantern. Propane lanterns don't put the Dracula on your battery, and they make heat to boot.

What else did you have hooked to the battery if any? Cause I have two batteries for my vex and the lights would be the only thing on one of them. And what I was figuring was theyed have about an hour running time each time(morning and evening). But I guess I'll have to test it before I go out cause don't want to be caught in the dark and the fish start biting. I had gotten one of them buddy heaters for Christmas last year and was figuring I could do away with lantern if I had them lights. But it will be like when I got an aqua view for a gift and I already had a vex and you don't leave home without your vex.The aqua view was neat but it just gets to be to much crap out on the ice.

I don't know about rope lights, but I've been using a 12 volt car acessary light for a couple years. You get about two hours life from a vex battery. Enough for me most days, but not something to night fish with for any lenght of time. This year I've bought a 15 led 12 volt light. It is supposed to last hours on a vex battery. I have had it hooked up for several hours to test it and it seems great. It is enough light for one man shanty although not as much as the car acessary light. So I've got both lights hooked up in my one man shanty and a selector switch so I can use either one by flipping a switch. I do carry a 7AH 12 volt battery just for lighting. The led came from Loby Baits. There is big thread on ice team discussion board about them, if you want to look it up. ALL THIS STUFF AND NO WHERE TO ICE FISH!!!!

The major point isn't that they draw too much power, its that they suck! They are just not a good thing, they are clumsy and don't provide very much light. Most people on this site that have bought them, gave them away! Me included! ;D

It won't be long before they have LED styles. They draw 90% less current and are in everything - flashlights, x-mas lights. lanterns,. you name it.
When someone spots them put up a post where so I can feed the cause ...
