Power Augers
« on: Dec 08, 2006, 08:19 PM »
Well guys ive been using a cheap mora 8in. hand auger for years now and i think its time to finally get a power auger. Im in a low slump for cash right now so i dont want to spend to much but i dont want a piece of crap auger either. I was wondering what peoples opinions were on the cheaper Eskimo augers for around $200-$250 was looking at the stingray or the mako. Or should i not waste my time with those and just spend the extra money on a strikemaster model or jiffy stealths?  Otherwise i think ill buy a 6in lazer hand auger cause i really dont need 8in and i know the lazer hand augers are pretty fast cutters. Thanks!

I bought a Strikemaster lazermag express last year. I heard great reviews about it. Its light weight and cuts like butter, but then again its new so it should cut good. Its a little pricey but i would recommend it for anyone. Just my .02

I've had a strikemaster for five - six years now and I havent had one problem with it yet .
It's not always the auger or the maker though .... it's all in how you take care of them .

I have been using Jiffy augers for twenty years. I had a three horse for about 14 years and I have had a two horse for 6 or 7 years. I'm still waiting for my first problem with a Jiffy. :o
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I've had a Strikemaster with a 7" Lazer auger for over 10 years and haven't had a problem with it. At the end of the season I start it and let it warm up, then shut it off, drain the tank, start it back up until all the gas has been run out of the line and carb, and hang it up until next season.

Well put, as with any large purchase there is no reason to go cheap, you want this thing to work and to last, if you cant afford a Jiffy this year, hold on and wait untill you can, it's worth the wait.

If you buy somthing cheaper you may find yourself replacing it in a few seasons and spending the extra cash anyway

No, I live in NH.

Just kidding. Yes I do have one experience with an eskimo auger. I had one come through a wall while I was inside the bob house. My buddy could not get his to run so he threw it. Yup, right into and through the side of the shack!

I have a Jiffy Stealth and love it, I believe you get what you pay for and thats how I buy most everything.  Buy junk now and pay for parts or just buy the best and it will work all the time.

I have a 2hp Eskimo mako 8" . Bought it used and it is 4 years old now . Only problem I've had is breaking the pull rope which I have done 2 times so far . I always use good fuel and drain it at the end of the season and it starts easy for me . I just need to go easy on the rope .

Make sure the new rope is long enough so you do pull out at the end, that's what breaks ropes

I've had my Lazer Mag Express 8" and 10", same power head, two augers for five years now.  Its never taken more than three pulls to get started, and once warmed up, usually only takes one pull.  Dont know much about the Eskimos, but my tourney partner had the Shark Z51 last year,  and I know a few guys getting the Z71 this year.  I finally upgraded my flasher this year and went with the LX-5, but dont see a reason yet to replace the Lazer from Strikemaster.

ROTFLMAO . I'm glad I've mostly outgrown throwing the rigging or taking my windshields out of my cars with whatever came handy and sometimes it was just the fist . Ouch .  ::)  lol

I don't own an eskimo but quite often have used one that others own and always found them to run fine and I tested a brandnew one last year and thought it was a good auger that ran and cut well albeit slower than my 3hp Jiffy 30 but not a big deal . I like the clear tank on them too .

I have never had any issues with my Jiffy either and this year will be testing a Nils and from the hype they are top performers as well . Think I will find that out very soon as she's been packed in the Jimmy for two weeks or more and started right up beforehand as did the Jiffy . .

Quite often issues occur with augers because of lack of maintenance or way too much abuse and also operator errors . I find most small engines have a sweet spot when they want to start such as pulls on the cord while choke is engaged or primer bulb pushed etc and it can be a learning curve but if you listen and pay attention issues don't as a rule happen . I always keep a spare plug and wrench handy just in case .

Keep gas stabilized and use a product such as Opti 2 or amsoil sabre for mix and they all are good runners . ;)

ive had an eskimo for about 10 years or so. only problem ive ever had is from race gas eating the factory fuel lines. other than that starts up every winter no problem.
