I like using a med/heavy set up and a 500 is too small for me personally. When I'm going for trout its usually in anywhere form 80-120ft and with 20lb braid that size reel isn't big enough. If I'm going for size, I use my heavy rod and 2500 reel set up for dead sticking and a med/heavy with 1000 size reel for my jigging set up.

8lb test braid and a 500 will work fine.  I landed quite a few in the teens on 500's no issues.  I carry too many rods and reels in the case to rock 1000's and even at simialr depths have never come close to getting spooled.  To each is own though.

I use level wind reels with 20.lb Power Pro or Fireline with at least a 6.2:1 retrieve ratio. Rod is a medium heavy.

Depends. How big, average size, are the trout? I often fish for small trout 45cm with 8# test, ML rod, and a 1000 size reel. But for 10-20# trout I use 15#, MH rod and 2500 reels. If going for 20# + set it up to 20-30# line,  H rod, and 3000-4000 reels. Larger hooks need heavier line and more hook setting power.Lines are braid and fluro leader.

I'm running frostbites Mr. Big with a 2500 series shimano vanford with 20# braid to 15# fluorocarbon at Fort Peck as my primary jigging rod.   I jig with 100mm jigging raps, 1oz heads on tube jigs and other plastics.  I've used lighter rods, but they don't handle the larger jigs in the depths as well as a heavier setup. Works for me....Good luck!
