Weather forecast wrong!?
« on: Dec 20, 2006, 06:38 AM »
I don't know about you guys, but it was 19 here when I got up at 630 am! I know forsure that the weather didn't say anything about it getting this cold. My pool was iced over again :-) Along with some smaller ponds on the way to town! Hey, its not much..but its defiantly a start! I know after last night the highs are lower, and the lowers are even lower ;D Hopefully the weatherman will keep being wrong with all these higher temps and we'll get more ice to stay!

We woke up to a dusting of snow and it was 17 degrees. Unfortunately they are calling for rain on Saturday. :'(

Can't say that, I heard lows of teens and low 20's last night for up north which is exactly what we got.  Listen to the public radio station WMAC 90.3 FM at around 12:20 during their midday news show and you get to hear the director of earth and atmospheric sciences, Mike Landon do about a 5 minute comprehensive forecast and he's the best weatherman around here and usually nails it for the short term.  The jokers on the TV station forecasts are usually more suspect but Mike's the MAN and knows weather better than anybody around here, plus you learn a lot about it during his forecast.
Slip there will always be exceptions. I dont get to listen Mike Landon as my job normally has me out of town. The few times I have heard him he seems very thorough, I'll give him that. For the most part the "jokers on TV are wrong wayyyyy to much.

The local TV weather guys really try their best to provide an accurate forecast.  They receive their info from the same sources as Landon does.  The primary difference is Landon works right at the NWS office on Fuller road and has unlimited access to state of the art computer based modeling equipment.  He also has about a dozen other meteorologists to bounce ideas off of.

This is an extremely difficult area to predict weather.  There are so many different weather patterns within the viewing area for the capital district.  These guys only have a brief 2 or 3 minutes to cover all the areas and have to generalize at times.  The nightly temps in Albany and the suburbs is not going to be what they will be in say Grafton or Caroga lake.  This requires the broadcasters at times to approximate or average.  In addiiton they have to entertain their audience.  It all boils down to ratings therefore if they just shot out low temsp for 30 different areas while on TV the little old grandma would get bored and change channels..hense dropping their ratings.

I only know this info because I have a friend who does TV meteorology and he and I have had the discussion several times over the past few years.
