Online large dead pike bait shipped to NYS?

Question:
I’ve pawed around online to see about having large dead suckers or golden shiners shipped to nys for pike/musky tipup fishing.

Has anyone done this before?
And is it even legal?

I no longer can get my hands on large live bait in cny area. I used to fish large suckers and keep them for the next few outing if they didn’t survive and use as dead bait

When live bait gets scarce I'll go to an asian grocery store. There's frozen baitfish w/ names i can't even pronounce that have more colors on em than a painted lure. Picked up a 2# bag of frozen smelt for 6.00

Try out harmon brook farms/maine smelt hatchery they sell dead bait shiners suckers dace smelt etc that's  nys approved just gotta hit it at the right time for things to be in stock , another one is pryor bait company in montana sells dead herring in all sizes that work well for me as dead bait and is nys approved ony thing it's pricey on shipping for a couple trays vs buying a big case of it , also call sonneys fat nancys or all seasons tackle shops in pulaski usually one of them has extra whole herring trays

I've resorted to that many times. Extremely reasonable pricing vs "bait quality" fish. Thing is some places only allow "approved/certified" dead bait packages which kinda lets this out in come cases.

Another option I've used is to develop a relationship with a local bait vendor(s). There's always attrition in the bait tanks and often times you can get the shop to save all the biggest ones for you and those are usable. Already certified bait, albeit dead. Just toss 'em in some salt to dry and toughen 'em a bit and store in supersaturated brine in the freezer. Works very well and sometimes even better than unsalted baits.

you better read the regulations  you can't  ice  fish  for  muskys  in  new  york state

Statewide fishing regulations for muskellunge changed in 2022. The new regulations provide for an open season from June 1 to November 30, a 40-inch minimum size limit, and a daily possession limit of 1.

and your  not supposed to  target them out of  season   even  if it is  catch and  release

And if you want big dead bait they sell bags at bass pro and other stores.  It’s got to be in a stir bought bag..

Any dead fish, or parts thereof excluding eggs, that are legal to possess and are not prohibited for use as bait, that have been packaged for commercial sale and have been preserved by methods other than by freezing only (e.g., salted minnows) can be used in any waterbody where it is legal to use fish as bait and do not require a receipt.

Each package of dead bait fish must be individually labeled, identifying the:

name of the packager/processor,
name of the species,
quantity of fish contained, and
means of preservation.



 you guys  coming in  from other states    mean no harm  but you could  mislead  a  unknowing  new york angler into a  ticket or get one  yourself ....

Ask your buddy who owns a baitshop to package your sea herring (we sabiki a ton if them late fall).  Ive been checked and have not had an issue in NY, MA, NH, VT all of which have the law written exactly the same way.
