Ice here...
« on: Nov 26, 2006, 09:26 AM »
The Muskrat and Mink trapping seasons opened yestersday so I began to set in the swamp behind Sherry's house here in Carlisle, about 15 miles West of Schenectady. I could walk on much of the ice without going through and the stomping on it to break it up so's I could find the 'Ratways' was very painfull indeed to the bone spurs in my heels. I was also mildly surprised that the fire pond was iced over too. None of the fishing spots had enough ice to fish through though. Keep on hoping. It's time to test the auger and get the shanty back from the deer stand. If the ice continues I'll try the auger for my under ice traps for beaver and otter too.

I've got some ice on the backwaters and small ponds here down in Westerlo, and it seems to be hanging in there. Looks like the water temperature is where it has to be, but the air isn't quite cold enough to build upon it. A week of temperatures in the teens would put us right where we need to be. We're real close. 8)

I hunted in Seneca County yesterday, and even with 60° temps, there was still skim on some of the shady wet spots in the field at the end of the day.

I'd save your auger for ice fishing. It will get dull quick for trapping. I usually use a light , long handled axe.

Another tip is to go mark all the runs when you get the chance. One snow and all that info is erased 'til next season. You can always set up after a snow, but have not much luck finding runs after the snows come.

Great to hear from ya again, Chainsaw.
Be careful on those backwater ice pockets. Hope all your traps are full and your hides are stretched.

I too saw some ice over the weekend.  ;D

There is the starts of ice in Hamilton county.  ;D
Location, just north of Wells.

These pictures were taken Friday afternoon about 3pm on the way up to camp for the weekend.
There were a few other small ponds that were iced and Mason Lake had a small amount of skim ice on Sat.
:o It won't be long guys.

That's one of the shortest posts I've ever read of yours :P
So keep us posted on how your trapline is working out for you. I used to be into it big time, but due to the low fur prices, I have not done it in years. I have some fond memories of the Old Trapline. Let me know what your getting on your pelts. I love to read Trapline stories. Even if you shoot me a PM and tell me some tales :)

Bought my first car back in 1978 from running a trapline before and after school. Only ever trapped muskrat but still got about $4.25 each 5-10 a day and it added up pretty quick. Haven't trapped since about 1985 but enjoyed it. I second what August said, Keep us posted.

You guys better check fur prices !  Last I knew, they are topping heyday prices, especially muskrats. Btw, The first muskrat I cought was when I was 5. Can't tell you exactly how many I ever cought in my life, but if there's a hell for killing them, I'm not coming out for a long , long time.

Thats great news chainsaw, love to hear about any ice in November!!!
And trapping always sounds like a good time. All my life I've wanted to get in to it, but never lived close enough to the woods for it to be practical.
Back in the 1980's I cleared lines all through Schoharie County and was amazed by all the signs of current trap lines, not to mention how many traps I found 20' up in trees I felled.
Anyway, some beautiful forest in schoharie, and would love to hear how you make out with the trpping.

Thanks for the update,
Wellsy

I've been seeing ice on some of the small ponds by me in the morning but by afternoon it is melted. We got to get some days where the high temp is not 60 + degrees.
