Nate,
Perhaps the state is trying to drain it in order to kill off the pike? ;D  Let us know what the status it!

Leave it to the state to do something like this.  My wife and I are friends with the assistant director of the division of sport fish-  I'll see what I can find out.  Fire Lake has been one of my favorite lakes for nice rainbows.  I haven't been to Anch for a while so I have not noticed the lake being low.

I talked with Dan at the game and fish about an hour ago, He said they are doing dam work. Said its a high priority because the engineers that have looked at it said it could fail at anytime. It's deemed "unsafe". He last heard they were dropping the level of the lake by 3 feet. Seems like its more than that already. This could make the fishing pretty good...or really crappy....Ill keep and eye on all of this.....maybe get some pics

I live on top of fire lake. What happened to the dam is true. There was talk that it could go out and flood lower eagle river. There then would be a swamp  where the lake is! The lake had risen substantially this summer diuring the rains. It was almost to the road. They have lowered it and are working on the dam. The road is closed until spring you have to take the north lake ridge road on the opposite side of the dam. Lots of construction and heavy equipment on road so be careful. Good luck, Chef

That's good news, Chef.  I was afraid the state was trying to kill off the lake because of the pike.  There are some dandy trout in there and I have always done well.  I may try to venture down this weekend if time permits.  More than likely I'll stay in the valley due to time constraints.

ANy idea how long to project will continue there?  I would be glad to help them with their pike problem, as soon as the ice is safe enough.  I had no luck with bows or pike there last year, but I only fished it twice.  More this year.....

Jigs work well on fire lake as well as a number 10 hook and single eggs. I have never had luck with the tip ups. It is a two hole lake and fish and game does come by. Fishing by the island is good for land locks and fishing by the dam and by the house with the flat roof is good for bows. I have seen some smaller pike come from there but nothing over 24 inches. I have gotten spoiled with the figure eight and flat horn monsters and it is worth the drive even though i can just walk down to fire lake! Chef

Chef-

Thanks for the tips, I will be testing your theories tomorrow!  Testing out the portable ice shack for the first time, so look out bows!

See you on the ice!
