Only one more week
« on: Feb 18, 2021, 10:03 AM »
Had a nice evening on the ice yesterday. The recent rain zambonied the lake with the exception of a hard bump here and there. The lake was singing and banging making ice, and it was calm enough to sit out on the ice without heat. Not many fish but way better than the boob tube. With only a week to go in the season on my favorite lake, I was thinking how much I look forward to ice fishing every year and it's almost over already. Nuts, here comes another shot of snow.  :( Get out and enjoy it while you can.

CT needs to stop with closing the trout ponds and opening day. Just leave it open year round like MA or if the state is really concerned about people catching freshly stocked trout then make trout catch and release only for two months. In the end it doesn’t really matter because they are sticking the trout for people to take anyways.

For what it's worth not all trout ponds close end of February. Some go until the end of March but the limits usually change. So essentially they'reopen year round minus 2 weeks to allow for stocking
The BIG one is just one flag away!

Species caught : largemouth, smallmouth,  bluegill, perch, White perch, crappie, trout, catfish, bowfin, pickerel, pike

Ma year round season is awesome. I've been taking advantage of year round fishing for decades. Whether ice or early/late open water.

The trout stocking isn't an issue. Since there's no opening day, they spend weeks staggering the stocking across the state. They can adjust their schedule to account for bad weather, late ice, floods etc. No rush to get it all done by opening day deadline.
I think crowds are way less than opening day crowds in states that have them. I see pics of guys all lined up on opening day, remember what it was like here years ago, and I'm very grateful to have year round fishing.

I could barely launch my boat this fall with all the dinks trolling right in front of it where the truck dropped them off the day before in fall.  Truly gross...

I’ve had the week off any I’ve been out a bunch, all over the state.

Not a lot of catching but I’m getting my time in, trying some new places too.

I’ve got three days left which should be plenty of time to turn it around.

I don’t even target trout. It’s just annoying that almost all the deep clear water lakes close at the end of the month.

Lots of dinks out there. Especially this year. Surprising number of out of state guys. I guess Ma is doing something right or they'd be in their own states.
The truck followers disappear quick and plenty of trout are left for the rest of the fall and winter.
At least the season stays open, allowing everyone to keep fishing for trout and other species.

Mass does does it right.  Every year CT hemorrhages anglers to mass due to that open season.  Funny thing is our best trout river stays open (most of it) all season right up until opening day.  I usually will take the Friday before the opener off and educate a few dozen pellet heads.

What makes me laugh is the state charges us for a trout stamp and instantly squandered that money on lakers that won't make it through summer if they aren't caught and harvested.

I don't care much either way, but I thought I heard the lakers were a gift/grant/trade? It seems like a waste though, they won't last til Memorial Day in CT.

They do that stupidity here, too. One of my favorite rivers to fish suckers and redhorse gets stocked with little 8-10" rainbows every spring, so you have to buy a trout stamp if you want to fish the stretch I run between May and July. Then the water hits 90+° in August and all the rainbows that weren't caught all die... such a great allocation of resources, considering the river has a serious and worsening silting problem that keeps getting ignored 🙄

Had a nice evening fishing with imsafan, and met Kubes90 on the ice. Shanty town like on big lakes, absolute zoo before sunset with machines buzzing around. It was pretty cold with the wind whipping, but it calmed down after dark. Lots of action before and after sunset, I had well over 20 flags. For the main event I caught 6 walters, imsafan scored 3, and I believe Kubes had 6 when imsa and I left around 9:00. Worth another trip before the end.
