Trout on tip-ups, need advice
« on: Jan 27, 2021, 09:36 AM »
I am going for some trout this weekend, probably Splake and Tiger being my target species. I have a good handle on jigging for them, but what would you guys use for a Jaw-Jacker style tip up?

I am thinking a jig and a minnow could work if they aren't too small, else a mealworm and tungsten jig if they are.

I usually run small minnow on tiny jig and about 2ft up tie in a treble hook with trout dough.  Just don't forget about the treble if a fish takes the minnow, easy to stick yourself.

 Where are you headed?

Checking out probably a couple different lakes in the Narrow Hills park. When you say a treble 2ft up do you mean just with a dropper loop?

I use a small snap tied in to attach the treble

Awesome Thanks Ran7ger. I've heard splake and tiger are great eaters, hope I can get some into the pan.

Be careful using a 2nd inline hook with trout. If you hook a good fish on bottom hook it's very easy to  snag the top hook at bottom of hole and loose the fish.

1/32oz jig with a 1" piece of nightcrawler hooked wacky is my go-to trout dead stick bait. If your gonna run minnows on a jaw jacker i tie up mini quick strike rig on 8lb flouro with a pair of octopus hooks, one goes in the head and one goes in the tail of the minnow.

This beauty came on a jaw jacker.  I've used both auto fisher and jaw jacker. Nothing beats the jaw jackers trigger system

For my set lines I use a small imitation roe hook with a single piece of corn about 12-16” above a small
Flashy spoon that has powerbait or a tiny minnow on it. Often the flashy lower presentation is the enticer and the small roe hook is the finisher

Do those hook set ups work on Rainbow too? I'm gonna give Diefenbaker another shot soon I hope.

Those Dief rainbows get pretty big so I bet it would work even better.

Thanks for the great advice, landed my first splake off the jaw jacker!

I did have a lot of issues with the tension and the triggers freezing up throughout the day. The trigger froze on this one, so I set it off myself and there was a fish on it! I have some low temp grease for reels with me, I could try that. Any tricks to stop the mechanism from freezing?

Make sure you don't get any water on the trigger  system . Keep it dry and you will be fine.
