How to use two flashers beside each other
« on: Jan 17, 2021, 08:09 PM »
Hi.  I typically only use my Marcum M1 while fishing alone.   Recently I started fishing out of an ice shanty with a buddy.   My buddy has an older Vexilar (maybe an FX19?).   The issue is when we are both in the shanty both flashers go crazy with interference.   I tried using the IR button on my Marcum, and when that didn't work by buddy tried using his interference button on the Vex.   No matter what we tried we couldn't get both units to work while we are close.   I see videos all the time of people using two flashers in a shanty, but I can't figure out how to do it without rendering both flasher useless.   Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

ONLY ONE ANGLER USES THE IR BUTTON ..you may not get rid of all the troubling interference but should get rid of enough to fish

Should both be able to use just one flasher

Ha.  He won't go out without the shanty.   We did use one flasher today (the Marcum) and it works but it would be nice to have both going so the holes could be a little farther apart.   The vex wouldn't pick up both ice jigs but the marcum did.

Depending on the transducer angles ..thinking that Marcum is 20deg and the Vexilar is either a 12deg or 9deg ..most likely a 12deg ..as it is the most popular you should be able to IR it out ..also that Marcum throws out some wattage as compared with the Vexilar..Deeper water and closer proximity (in the same hub/flip) as opposed to bucket fishing 10 plus feet apart or further and/or separate shelters apart  will have a overall better effect .. My buddies M5(20 deg) can throw out some wattage and signal ..in 20fow in two separated flip overs  appox 25 feet apart ..his unit was throwing my Vexilar(19 deg) into a tizzy ..kinda funny ..until I realized what was going on..lil IR button pushes later on my Vexilar ..as his was not having IR issues ..less wattage thrown his way Vexilar 800 w...as opposed to Marcum 1000 watts..  problem was resolved ..if I recall correctly it did not totally get rid of the interference but enough to get the job done . What I was experiencing from his signal was an image higher up in the water column above where I was presenting my lure ..knowing there are trout in the water I was fishing ...I raced my lure up to the mark ..then nothing ...after some time I notched a pattern ..both in timing and to the depth that the mark would appear consistantly . BINGO INTERFEENCE FOR THE WIN.

Yes, this works.
My Vex doesn't like Marcum, but gets along with Lowrance fine.

Cool, how do you change the ping setting on a flasher type sonar?
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Does your buddy's Vex have a multibeam transducer?  If so having him change frequency will yield your best results if you guys have been running on the same freq. or close to it.  Also just turning your gain down will at least help filter out some of the feedback from the other persons unit.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

also change the depth of the transducers.  have one a bit more below the hole and try one just into the water.

There is a noise reduction button on the Hummingbird Ice models.  But, if you fishing next to someone with another Hummingbird, only one of you can have the noise reduction feature working, at a time.  I'm not sure if the noise reduction feature works on a Hummingbird, if you are next to someone using a different unit.  I have never had that experience, in order to try it.

Not certain on the birds but on Marcum and Vexilars both have Interference Rejection buttons ..can/will remove most of the wonky readings between the units .
