You my friend, are a smart man.
I figured I'd torture myself again today. Kind of regretting it...lol

The alarm went off at 400, got up started the coffee and seen the trees in my back yard dancing and called it lol... Been watching last nights UFC card instead...

If history repeats I figure there will be plenty of tortuous winds, cold and snow on derby weekend to look forward too so missing today is ok...

Had to get out despite the wind. My 14 year old got a bunch of new gear for Christmas, been itching to get out. He got a shelter but we couldn't get the anchors into the ice so couldn't use it.

We tried a new pond in Southern NH. Unfortunately, seeking a wind break, we set up too close to the boat ramp. There was a group of guys with sleds and motorcycles that parked trailers at the ramp and spent the afternoon doing the vroom vroom thing back and forth, back and forth, for hours. Straight out 100 yards, than Straight back. Over and over and over. Each pass was about 10 yards from our set, up wind. All the smoke choked us, all the ice chips buried our traps. The noise was brutal. We couldn't hear each other speak. I don't know why they just went back and forth when they had the whole pond to run.

We had a slow day, one pickerel. Can't imagine the noise topside helped the fishing. I know it spoiled it for me. Can't imagine how the homes on the pond can take it.

My boys did well, didn't complain about the cold or the slow fishing. Still better than Saturday on the couch. Now they've had a taste of wind chill, the calm days will seem balmy.

Braved the elements yesterday and glad I did.  Was blustery for a couple hours, for sure, but overall it was pleasant to be outside in the sunshine.  Never felt cold other than my fingertips after rebaiting my traps.  Hit a *very* popular southern NH two-tier lake and our foursome managed a couple rainbows in close (one on eggs, one on a shiner), while my tipups set further out went untouched all day.  From our spot we could see the public access area and there must have been twenty or more portables set up along that shoreline.  Quite a sight.  Oh, and there was about 2 acres of open water between us.  Strange to see with whitecaps showing and ice lifting up from the waves.  (We had 5-7" where we fished.)

Very nice, Steve!

MikeZ, I had some anchors once that wouldn't work for me either. I bought some Eskimo anchors, and they work great.

sometime you just need a cordless drill with the adapter to get those anchors in..I didnt make it out today (way to windy) did make it out yesterday to a spot I hadnt fished in years (now I know why)..Ha ha..I did have a nice little island behind me to the south for a wind break, had my eskimo set up with my heater so I was comfortable and did have the whole place to myself, got 1 rainbow first thing and thought I was in for a good day..1 smallie after that and a few dink perch..There is always next weekend or maybe a day off during the week..(1 can always hope)..

Went out today and packed up a little after 1. Today was definitely the windiest day I've fished by myself, and on par with that windy derby day a couple years ago. I was at the same place today and it is not the big lake. When I first got out to my spot, I couldn't even set up my shack, but I got it up after the wind died down just a bit.
Managed one laker around 15 inches and lost two more fish on the jigging pole that felt bigger. The second one I lost looked like a rainbow; I looked down the hole and saw him spit the hook. Now to thaw out my bones.

Sounds like a good day Steve!
Yea I swung by that spot beginning of last week and the edges were still moving a little. I wanted to hit the deeper water there, so I opted to stay away for another week. Maybe the middle will lock soon.

Got out yesterday getting dressed might have been the worst part, I hunkered down in a cove that was the only one on the lake that hadn't blown free of snow, the walk over was tough in the open on glare ice.. I drilled  a obout 20 holes in 2 -10fow.
. Egged the shallow ones and guarded 3 with my new baby traps..the  3 remaining got shiners.. it was slow, only 3 flags between 7 and noon.

Right,  puking  crayfish, yellow perch, helgramites and eggs, never even knew it was hooked, flag went up, she sat there trying to get every last egg out of the rocks..

With eggs 3 to 3 and a half.. without.. 2- 2.5

You probably have a good idea where I was , you know the spring seep on the corner, where I pressure ridge ways starts.. bingo..funny thing, they were dropping the lake level, I had  traps that had a foot of water when I set them, when I left there wasn't room for a. Crayfish under the ice.

Yes I know the spot, have not fished it that area in a few years

That’s funny about the water levels, I’ve seen it happen
