Single hook quickstrike rig
« on: Jan 15, 2021, 07:08 AM »
I was reading some where about just using one treble for a quick strike rig and i was wondering if it was possible to use a quickstrike rig with just a single hook or if you wouldn’t recommend it

I'm pretty sure the point of a quick strike rig is having multiple hooks is to hook the fish no matter where they take the bait. I don't think single hooks would be considered a quick strike. I do fine on single treble hooks though.

It depends on the size of your bait. I believe the wisconsin regs require a quick strike rig for bait that is over 8" long. Single hooks are all i use for med shiners/suckers.

few years ago I started using a treble over my large kahle hook.  haven't lost very many since.  to be honest split ring them together would be a lot stronger.  I just never have. lol  I use heavy mono so im fairly safe. ;D

I bet I k now what you were reading, Probably something about Swedish or pike hooks also known in these parts as a quick strike rig/hook. Looks like this:

Really old school. thread your dead bait on from back to front and drop it down the hole. Get a flag and set immediately.

Not much used anymore as they have been determined to be "fish killers". The action of hooking levers the point of the hook through the roof of the mouth. Often times that hook point winds up near or actually in the brain of the fish. Next you gotta wrangle that big pointy thing outta there. Not easy and usually pretty ugly. Not always an instant kill, the fish is landed and if released goes on to die from the injury later. State of WI did quite a study on post release mortality some years ago with those hooks. Can't even buy them most respectable places any more. I see 'em from time to time gathering dust on a mom n pop tackle shop's shelf.

So it does exist. It really is meant for larger dead bait. And I cannot recommend their use unless you intended to keep everything you catch.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Blast from the past there Sox.  I have one of these hanging above my work bench.  A neat artifact for sure but its probably better hanging on the wall than under a Beaver Dam.  We used em in the 60's with big dead smelt and would slide a 16d framing nail in its belly. I guess to sink it or keep it presented in the right manner...don't really recall.  They caught fish.

Find yourself some Sureset treble hooks, with one of the hooks being slightly longer and with a wider gap - Jann's Netcraft has them.  I picked up two boxes of all four sizes, since I heard they're no longer being made and hard to find.  I used them this year on pike and they worked great.

I am jealous Knife2sharp... I only found three sizes and they have been discoed and are rapidly becoming unobtanium. Still cool hooks but I'm not convinced that they have an advantage over a simple, smaller than usual treble.

Hard to find, but in a pinch, I have made perfectly good ones myself. They are called Double Ryder Hooks, small hook in the bait, single hook exposed.

I use them anywhere it is legal (not for trout) and lip hook 99% of my fish.

I have totally removed treble hooks from all of my rigs and switched to using circle hooks.  I did this this summer for catfish as well and had great results.  Reduced deep hooked fish by 90%, did not loose any fish during play, and vast majority of the time the hook is right in the corner of the mouth- easy to remove!  This winter I have landed 12 pike and no deep hooks and no lost fish during play.  If I use a smaller bait I use one hook, when I use a larger bait I have rigs with two hooks.

What size hook do you use?
