Kids ice fishing gloves?
« on: Jan 11, 2021, 03:59 PM »
My son is 10 yrs old and ice fishes with me regularly.  Like most kids of this age gloves are an issue.  He wants dexterity for fishing, gets his hand wet reaching in a hole or playing with minnows, wet gloves freeze and don't have much heating value, has trouble getting wet hands back in gloves, etc...

Right now I typically have him wear nitrile gloves and some mittens.  He keeps the mittens on if not in the shack, or if its nice out he will leave those on and be outside.

Anyone have any great product or idea for kids with gloves ice fishing?

Thank you.

My boy is 9. He’s a women’s small.

I’d look for wool gloves with at least 80% wool. Wool won’t freeze like other materials and Kees it’s insulating properties while wet. My boy’s gloves are the convertible glove/mitten type. Works pretty well. Fingerless for dexterity and a mitten for more warmth. You can even keep using the nitrile gloves underneath them if using them work for him.

Quality cold weather gear is surprisingly hard to come by. The above advice about wool gloves goes for footwear also. Wool socks are great but finding smaller sizes less than $20 a pair is a struggle. I found these on Amazon. 80% wool.

He hasn't actually used them yet but they feel nice and I have high hopes for them. If you check them out, the sizes are labeled kind of weird compared to regular shoe sizes. My son wears a 5.5 and I ordered the “size 6-8” and they fit him well without being pulled tight. Wool shouldn’t be tight anyways.

Good luck man!

Same dilemma here. His fingers get cold way too fast.
Looking forward to see if anyone has a good pair to recommend.

After talking to a few friends and my son last night, we have a new plan to try.  Depending on weather and elements we will use Nitrile gloves, wool fingerless gloves, and adult medium striker mittens clipped to his jacket.  The idea is the nitrile and wool can keep his hands dry, provide some warmth, and allow for dexterity.  The mittens clipped (yes, old school strecthy clips) to his heavy coat will hopefully allow for these gloves to stay dry and not get lost.  These would be used for when we are walking out, getting things ready to go or put away, and to help warm up hands throughout the day, with the ability to put in a handwarmer for additional heat, and the large size lets these come on and off fairly easily.  Best part was we had all three of these pieces of gear on hand.  We'll see, but it seems like a decent idea.

Maybe look into using one of those fleece tunnel muffs to tie around his waist that he can put his hands in while wearing the thinner gloves.  Can stick a hand warmer in there, too, if need be.

Striker has some kids gloves that my 9 year old loves.  I found them for under $35.

Maybe a muff with hand warmers will work better than gloves? Just bring a towel to dry hands before putting them in the muff

I'll add the muff with warmers to the options.  Thanks!
