New shack project
« on: Oct 22, 2006, 06:36 PM »
Started building the shack.  Here are some picts, going to make the sides out of foam board and use some straping over it to hold it in place as well as adhesive.  It was framed with 2X3s, it actually isn't all that heavy.  It is 6X8.

It looks crooked but it is sitting on more of a hill than it looks like in the picts.  Boy I hope it isn't as warm this winter.

Anyone else got some shacks in the works?

Will be building some steps, couldn't beat the price of the joists as they were scrap.  They will all be mounted on skis which will make it even taller,

Better not have too many cold BEvERageS in the shack and forget how tall it is.

I am getting antsy as the weather gets colder, maybe I will put styrofoam in the joists and get it out real early.

looks good--just like my hard-side I built last year--single pitch, 6x8.  Mine is in sections though, to fit it into a suburban (no trailer).  When I get my digi camera, I'll post some pics.  Nice Job

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

Looking good guys. Now all you need is some of that bullet proof cardboard. What a perfect opportunity to try it out!
Looking forward to some "crappie" nights!

how far on center are the studs. im thinkin 20 or 24 would save a slight amount of wt. when its buttoned up it should still be ridgeid enouph.
  your opinion?

I found an awesome way of getting a custom made shack for dirt cheap.

My woodshop teacher is a really nice guy ( I race XC running with his son ) and I was talking to him one day in school about a shack they once made and auctioned off. I asked if he would consider doing it again and he was all for it.

I brought in plans for an 8X10

I havn't gotten into detailed stuff yet, but plan on insulating it, and the teacher wants me to get as creative as I possibly can. perhaps but a chimney on that bad boy, I am considering made of playwood that fold down from the sides.

the cool thing is, the teachers gets his wood DIRT CHEAP for working with the school, and they are only going to charge me what it costs to make it. I want to see if I slap a huge sign on my shack maybe the store will even take a bigger price off the wood

oh well, cant wait to get in depth with the shack

With a Shack that big...  plan a lightweight design...1 2x4 goes twice as far when you cut it half.. ;)  there are lighter, just as durable as plywood materials you can use to sheet your walls...I keep hearing good things about Luan... ;) ;D

Left Hand - I think luan is often used mostly because of lack of other options.  Once you get 8 or 10 sheets on your shack, it is by no means "light".  Find some of the old alum. roofing that they used to put on chicken barns or find someone who works at S.D. Warren to get some old mill cloth and paint it.  I even bet just foam insulation wrapped with some sort of Typar like product treated would hold up surprisingly well.  Good luck.

I have used Sheet Metal on 2 main sides of my shack..  so more or less I have the 2 ends to close in,  total 2 sheets, with 1 sheet for the roof.. In my opinion 3 sheets of Luan is considerably lighter than 3 sheets of Plywood and just as durable...  To each their own I guess.... ;)

Left Hand - if you are comparing it to plywood, osb, etc. absolutely.  I was just trying to offer you a few lighter sheathing options.

gamefisher...i saw a shack a few years back that was made with the mill cloth you speak of...i was thoroughly impressed at how light wieght it was...the owner had painted the cloth with an exterior paint and it was pretty tough and definately waterproof...would work well with fiddleheads resin idea...lefty i might have something you can use  ;)

Billdit - I too am very interested in how this new product of fiddlehead's turns out.  It sounds potentially very promising to future shack builders.  Maybe you could talk him into Lefty's shack serving as a "pilot project?"  Royalties due of course if it works out ;D

P.S.  - There is a shack on my home water each year that is made out of fiberglass cloth and resined.  Been around a long time so durability is not in question.  Not sure about weight however.

Hey Billdit - how do you think a roll of Ice and Water would work?  A 75ft. roll would do a 4 X 8 and probably weigh 50 pounds + / - ?  Definitely would take much to heat either.

well it would work just fine. however the ice and water shield does not hold up well when left exposed to sunlight. the rubber membrane comes apart from the adhesive after a while...50 lbs is a fair estimate it may be a little more.
