I use C maps for lake Nipissing up here..it's free..it doesn't have depths of any other lakes in the area but can save spots that you want etc which is ok for me..I know the lakes well enough to get started and have a fish finder for depths and things..for free it has been fantastic for me on Nipissing..it even has a directional nav arrow so you can drive exactly to your spot you want to fish..love it

I think you are good to be prepared. In Idaho, storms come over the mountain with little warning, and it can be a whiteout. I have used Navionics, ONX, and a Garmin 73SV, so I guess you can pick what works for you, and what you will get the most additional function out of. I will say that phones die, especially in the cold, and if you NEED it to work it might pay to have a backup. I know several people that have handheld GPS units that collect dust, now that phones do everything, so you might search EBAY for a cheap Garmin that can lay down a breadcrumb trail to follow back to the car.

I have used garmin 78 with lake maps, Love it, use it in summer and winter, Marks my gps points, tracks my path, and I can download my waypoints into the ocmputer for back up, and it floats if you drop it. just got a set a rechargeable batteries and alternate. I put a mount on my boat and snowmobile to hold it while traveling, love it.
Its all fun and games until someone loses a walleye.......

Hunt stand is free although you can also pay to upgrade services... It has a trace feature which i use for tracking deer that is exactly what you want.... Works really good... And if you track a deer turn on your trace... If you ever lose blood look back at your trace and most times you can get a general direction of which way the deer is heading and pick back up on it.... Helped me more than once

satellite modules do drain a battery fast and if you want to prepare better bring a battery charge pak and or use a sonar/shuttle that can power and charge it.

i haven't used my garmin rino for many years. i have plenty of spare cell phones that can be dedicated for most anything such as gps only and keep my primary cell phone for communications.
i use one on my bikes instead of a wireless bike computer.

Any serious outdoorsman would benefit from owning a dedicated, outdoor, ruggedized handheld GPS device. I have had many over the years, but right now use a Garmin 276cx.
