BODY FOUND OF MISSING TL MAN

A Tupper Lake man that has been missing since Friday has been found dead after a two-day search.

55-year old Gary Cyra was reported missing on Tuesday. A caretaker working on Middle Saranac Lake saw a man fishing on the ice Friday and saw a parked car at the South Creek boat launch off of Route 3. Around 7am Tuesday the caretaker noticed the car was still there and called police.

DEC Forest Rangers and an Environmental Conservation Officer, State Police, and volunteers from Search and Rescue of Northern Adirondacks had searched yesterday and today. A state police dive team from Plattsburgh has been called in to assist in the search.

On Tuesday a canine team searched the woods around Cyra’s parked car and the lake. A bucket, boot, and hat were discovered yesterday washed up on shore.

Today a New York State Police helicopter observed Cyra’a body in six-feet of water between the south shore of Middle Saranac Lake and Ship Island. The State Police Scuba team was deployed and recovered the body.

Investigation revealed that he had fishing equipment and intended to go fishing. State Police said did go on the ice, which was not strong enough to hold his weight. Cyra fell through and was unable to get himself out.

DEC Lt. Gary Freidrich said they had spoken with Cyra’s sister and learned that he had talked about ice fishing over the weekend.

Dr. Francis Varga conducted an autopsy today at Adirondack medical Center in Saranac Lake. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to drowning. Franklin County Coroner Brendan Keough ruled the death to be accidental.

We still have lakes frozen over but the ice has a consitency of a snowcone. I wouldn't even think about going on the ice in April. He must have not been an IS member.

Thanks for the article adkmtBob
