Is this a good deal?? Vex Flasher, New...
« on: Sep 11, 2006, 04:38 PM »
Looking on a local website and I see they're advertising a Vex FL-18 Genz Pack.  With tax, after the discount, it's gonna be 282.50.  I know squat about Vex's and don't really have need for one due to my type of fishing, but I may pick it up and have it or use it as a Christmas present.....

Anybody got any input on this??  Is it a deal???  Esox

That's about $80 less than what they normally go for. Before taxes they usually go for around $369.

A local site here in NY...I've got a call into them tonight to see what they can tell me about this thing...and the kid there told me to call back tomorrow when the store had the full staff there.

I'm pretty sure before I posted the price was good, but with the new models Vex is coming out with I wasn't sure if there were discrepancies with this model or not. As I said before, I do not need a Vex for the manner of ice fishing I do, I jig perch in water less than 20 foot and set traps for pike, thats it....

Thanks for the replies so far......Esox

I bet if you try out the Vexilar you will change your thinking.  ;)  It works great for bottom hugging perch.

Well I know your asking about a Vex and if it's a good deal but here's a better one yet I just heard about and gives you another choice .

Marcum has the new VX-1 coming out and from Nov 15th to Dec 31st  there is a rebate coupon in the box worth $50 . This puts the VX-1 at $199 . regular $249 .

The unit features 3 color display, zoom on bottom 5 ft ,6 levels of interference rejection, battery and charger, electronics shuttle with adjustable transducer arm and transducer utilizing 600 watts of power peak to peak . Warranty is also 1 year .

In comparison this to me is a great deal with alot of features for an entry level price when compared to the aforementioned  Fl-18 .

Trapper.... This wouldn't happen to be the "VXR" that they manufacturer for Cabelas, would it.  I almost got
the VXR till I decided on the LX 5.  They go for $249 also. Quite a bit of flasher for so little bread.

Iceholefisherman it could very well be the same unit but at the moment I don't know because this is just new news to me and I also heard that an entry level camera VS250 is going to be released soon for $159.00 .

Man I hate to hijack this thread by throwing Marcum into the fray because the question is on the vex FL-18 but it sure is nice to see a company trying to let everyone into the electronics field by putting out good product that will be in different budget ranges yet suit their needs . I wish so many options and price ranges had always been available to us the consumer .

Esox Slayer I think because these units have not been released as of yet is why you're not seeing it yet on the Marcum site but my information is from a  reliable source . ;) Also the VXR was made for Cabela's specifically by Marcum and Cabela's put their brand name on it .

Trapper.... Here is the Cabelas discription of the VXR...........
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cabela'sŪ MarCum VXR Flasher....Obtain consistent and accurate soundings with the three-color display VXR Flasher Sonar Unit. It has 600 watts of peak-to-peak power output and a 20° transducer cone angle with adjustable transducer arm. Reliable readings are assured by its patented multilevel "Interference Rejection" System. Improve your target acquisition with the Auto Zoom feature that sets the zoom window to the bottom 5 feet. Can detect a 1/16" target at 40 ft. Depth ranges of 20, 40, 80 and 160 ft. Includes 12-volt battery, charger, battery charge indicator, soft-pack carry case, Ice Shuttle with battery and transducer storage and transducer float.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sounds pretty close to the new VX 1.  The VXR has an adjustable arm AND a transducer float.
Cabelas sells them for 249.00.

In reference to the original question Yes I think its good deal.  Other than the price do I think the VXR and the fl18 will compare?  Probably not.

Thats a good price, I paid $369.00 for Fl-18 Genz pack. The VX from Cabela's is a very cheesy set-up compared to the Genz pack. The auto zoom on the 18 works great for perch, due to the fact they almost always are tight to the botom as are many other species. :)

I can't comment on the Marcum brand as I have never used one but I can tell you that I absolutely would not trade my Vex for anything.  It is awesome!  Watching the lure go up and down as you jig it and then seeing that fish come up off the bottom and slam that lure is very cool.  Once you see that red line come up from the bottom then feel the tug on the line.  You get to where you don't even watch the poles anymore, just watch the vex it never lies!
