Fishing on a trout pond = Oops
« on: Feb 23, 2019, 05:30 AM »
I was driving by Mount Williams pond in Weare yesterday morning and saw a couple of guys that set up a pop up and began fishing on a designated trout pond = giant no no in New Hampshire. I drove about a mile down the road and decided to turn around and go back and tell them it was not legal and hopefully save them from a negative fishing award.

As I arrived at the ramp where they had set up about 100 feet out, a Weare Police Officer was already there and he told them it was not allowed.

Don't know if fish and game was notified.

I drove past the lake about 1/2 hour later and they had departed

Rules are posted on a board at the ramp but I guess they didn't see them

If it was an honest mistake I’m ok with a warning and a little education. If they set up a shanty they weren’t trying to hide and may have legit not been aware. Their fault - yes.

forgive my ignorance. A police officer can not hold a person fishing outside of listed regs, but a DNR officer can hold some one for a routine traffic stop?
bad example, I get it.

Hey johnnh - I appreciate that you attempted to set those guys straight.  If I was doing something wrong, unknowingly, I would hope someone like you would let me know.

I was working at Cannon Mt about 30+ years ago. A fellow employee and I drove by Echo Lake(trout pond) and saw a group out there ice fishing. They had all new gear from the shanty to the clothes and and tip-ups when we walked out to them. We told them the law about trout ponds and advised them to skidaddle before the green goblin saw them. I figured they were clueless about fishing in general but I was wrong as they showed us a couple brookies in the 18-19 inch range ! They left without gettting in trouble and didn't mean to violate any fish laws,I still laugh about that one.

You can’t ice fish ant designated trout ponds and can only fish them open water from the 4th Saturday in April til mid October
You count your years by the Winters.

It’s not being Cocky if you can back it up.

It would be nice if we had some remote ponds or ponds with a view like profile to ice fish. I would prefer a remote pond to walk to that had trout. It would be nice to fish a place.like that off the beaten path. There all trout ponds.  Too pad there wasn't a few. It would be an adventure to go to a remote trout pond and ice fish it.

Not a bad idea for fisherman with the legs to do it. Echo Lake would be better it would he hard to fly fish Profile Lake with ice on it.  ;D

If they didn't have designated trout ponds there might not be any decent trout to catch, since many people keep the trout they catch.

There are ponds that have trout that are non-designated waters. It may take some time to find them, but the state's F&G website has a good list to start with!

Winnipesaukee is a lake, not a pond and is not a designated trout pond.
