Chittenden snow condition
« on: Jan 21, 2019, 01:30 PM »
Just wondering how much snow on Chittenden.  I'm thinking about heading up there Thursday morn and was wondering if there's too much snow on the ice for ATV. Thanks!

You mean feet?  Or did the wind blow it all off?  There was a foot on St. Catherine 20 miles west, and a lot lower elevation - usually Chitt gets buried.

I took the bait, hook line and sinker - see what I did there?  Its a fishing joke.

Even with the snow, Chittenden isn't too bad to access, because you can probably still park right at the dam?  I haven't been in years though, so I'm not a good resource.

Anyone know how Chittenden looks for ice/snow? Basically wondering if I would be able to drive out later this week for a night of fishing.

About three hours away so any info helps, feel free to Pm. Thanks!!

A freind of mine was there Saturday night. Just an inch or so of snow on the ice hope that helps. Another 1-3” coming tomorrow night supposedly

Perfect. Thanks for the info. And just to check - driving on the ice there is acceptable? Went a couple times earlier in the year (enjoyed it) and saw lots of atvs - assumes my small 4wd suv is good to go? Thanks again for the response - big help for me to firm up plans -

There is a reason you didn't see any vehicles out there.  It's a hydro reservoir, and the water level can change at any time, making getting off the ice almost impossible.  The only place to get on and off is the boat ramp at the dam, and if that breaks at the shoreline, you are screwed.  This time of year the water is drawn down quite a bit, so just getting on and off the ice you will be on ice that had broken at the water level and up on the ramp.  My advice is to keep vehicles in the parking lot.

I haven't been up there in a few years, but it used to be plastered with signs saying gas powered vehicles were prohibited and I knew someone personally that was scolded by a game warden for snowmobiling across it.

Most places that have gas motor restrictions have it for augers and boats also wich i know isnt true for chittenden. But i do not own an atv or sled so i cannot say if its allowed. Seen plenty of then out on the ice there tho including a day whne the warded came and checked us

Interesting - last time I was there I was the only one not on an atv! Must have been 10 of them. And at least one truck taking their hard side out - I may walk on from what I’m hearing - thanks for the info everyone!
