It's finally coming!

The BIG freeze that is. Lots of so-so ice around CT now but the next three days look to make big ice. Below 0 for a couple of nights, that's really cold around here. Who's going Thursday/Friday? I'm thinking Thursday night.  :tipup:

I will be out every night starting Wednesday at Gardner.  I will let you know how the ice is. Last time I was out on Saturday it was around 5”. I am guessing it is still solid with the cold temps we have every night.

It's cold enough right now that I may not be able to wait past tomorrow....maybe I'll see you there. We were there on Saturday too, there was only 3" heading up the lake. On the ride in we pushed a wave that started cracking the ice in front of us...no fun.

Most of it's private, the public choices are the boat launch or the state park. The state park is a walk from the parking area.

Were you the guys with the quad on the ice Saturday evening? I thought for sure they were going to bust through.

Yeah, that was us. We thought we were going in the lake too. It's not a quad though, it's a machine made for ice rescue and fishing that floats and can extract itself.

That sounds like a nice machine. Still, when I heard the machine going down the shoreline all I could think was, “How is the ice holding them up with balls that big?”

I'll be going out after work today in a local pond. Looking forward to the weekend though. Can't wait to see how much ice is made the next few days

I’m off all next week, I timed it perfectly. Gardner in the afternoon will be done at least once. The rest of the time I’ll be hanging big dead stuff for those fish I can’t seem to hook well enough to ice.

Might even be able to try a cove or two depending on how fast the water recedes.

I'll be out Thursday for sure bright and early trying my luck with the Perch.  If I had the right setup I'd make it an overnight on Squantz and try for the Walleye...

It goes without saying that we're nuts!  All of us ice fishermen! ;)  ;D  Truth is Calamity Bob can travel on 2 inches of good black ice with two guys, at slow speed. We tested it quite a bit when it was new, with one guy it can move on a little over an inch. Even though it can climb out, I try not to go on less than 3 inches because it's a pretty uncomfortable feeling dropping in the lake. Saturday night there was 3 inches toward the north end, on the way in we got moving a little too fast and pushed a wave up ahead. We could see and hear the ice cracking all around us but luckily stayed on top. This is season six for CB, it's been a great machine for early and late ice. Only been in the lake three or four times during those six years, every time was when we knew it was likely to happen. Snow cover is it's weakness, any more than 8-10" and it's a no-go.

It's a Wilcraft, they're made in the midwest. I don't have a good photo on my phone, they have a website with lots of info.

To my knowledge it's the only one this side of Syracuse. It provides a nice sense of security when ice conditions aren't ideal, plus you have the shanty mounted on top. Super easy to set up, start fishing and get inside where it's warm. Or you can jig through the floor, although I would rather have the space in a regular flip over instead of a couple of fixed position holes in the floor.

I remember meeting you about the time you got it around 6 years ago, pretty cool machine and I remember you had it packed to the tilt!

I was on a pond up my way (northern Berkshire County in MA) which had over 30 inches of ice on it this past weekend.

I shudder (pun intended) to guess how much ice it must have on it now.
