Fished Bantam on Saturday, (7-8" every I drilled, decent action, brought home a few perch and a big crappie on tilts), windy AF as the kids say these days, my brother and I packed up, he was in a rush, and packed things incorrectly, resulting in all the tank of 32:1 fuel spilling and soaking my pack containing ALL my ice lures, some of which (and I know some of you are all guilty of this) where still in the packages, gifts or impulse purchases of years past. Everything got covered in gas/oil mix, anyone have any ideas for cleaning off lures from gas? I'm a bowhunter when i'm not ice fishing, and really think there is a correlation between smell and prey and transferring that into meat. It is a literal sticky situation when it comes to cleaning them with a sponge, maybe a soak of some kind? Any input would be appreciated, since it really don't want to throw out lures, get angry, and have to crack my knucklehead brother in the skull.

Short soak in some denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. Can get from hardware store. Do in small lots and judge how they smell after the dunk.

Dawn dish soap and water would be my first choice. If that doesn’t work try the denatured alcohol, great stuff but prolonged exposure can soften some finishes. It’s a great cleaner degreaser.

Works on wildlife during oil spills.
IMO get them as clean as possible and don't worry about gas smell. Most of our lakes have enough boat traffic that gas odor is a part of the fishes environment.

Simple green or Dawn dish soap should do the trick.

I agree with simple green, before I retired (lineman) when we had pole hits and cars were leaking battery acid/oil and gas, hazmat would put down speedy dry then wash with simple green

I agree with Simple Green. ATF recently switched to Simple Green from Dawn for fire investigators when cleaning their tools after arson investigations. Did a study and found it to be quite effective along with scrubbing.

After your lures are clean, switch to a clam plate. Those things work well.
If you can't play nice, get off the ice!

So....

Did your gear clean up? Or does your brother have a fresh knot upside his head?

In a (late) follow up, I pulled the packaged lures out from the gassy cardboard and plastic, but very little residual gas smell stayed on the lures, almost all of them being metal. I used dish soap, having that on hand, with a backup of making a trip for simple green if dawn didn't work. Put warm water and soap in an empty peanut butter jar, dumped the lures in and gave them a shake. Note: don't dump a bunch of lures in a jar and shake. The soap did take and remaining gas smell off and didn't seem to damage any finishes. The problem was the knot of lures I had to take apart when I was finished. Small batches of a few lures would saved me considerable aggravation. Lesson learned.

My pack is still gassy, I haven't addressed that yet, as I have a spare and more convenient pack I'm now using. I may try simple greening that this weekend.

Good to hear the lures cleaned up. I imagine treble hooks and Hali’s don’t play nice together when shaken @).
Simple Green on the pack should work. Skip the qt for $5.00 and get the gallon at HD for $8.97, you’ll be glad you did.
