Portable Power Box
« on: Jan 25, 2019, 07:25 PM »
I recently built my first portable power box to take with me on the ice. It has a charging cup for glow-jigs and lures; 2 USB plugs for charging phones and cameras; a cigarette lighter 12 volt socket; 2 sets of banana jacks for shanty lighting, depth sounders, etc. It also has 6 very bright area led lights and all powered by an 18 amp hour, 12 volt sealed lead acid battery.
The box also has enough room to store my spare batteries for my drill/auger and my Aqua-Vu micro stealth 4.3 underwater camera and camera viewer tripod.
I believe that the battery is sufficient to jump an a tv, or snowmobile.
What do you think?

I think you are a lot smarter than me and what ever happened to just going fishing?

Smarter....LOL.....I highly doubt it. But, yes, it is about going ice fishing. I need little projects to keep me busy in between fishing adventures. It's more fun when these projects are associated with my love of ice fishing. I plan on using the power box year round camping, fishing, etc.
Thanks for the reply Mossy10

looks great Woody! Wish I knew what to do with it all.
Thanks Mike
I guess you need to chalk it up under creature comforts.
When I was much younger all I needed was a bucket, a couple ice fishing devices, an auger, and some jigs and bait.
Then, due to career choices, I was unable to ice fish for over 20 years.
I decided to return to ice fishing last winter. I gotta tell you, it was quite amazing at how things have changed. Besides, now I'm retired, I can afford it, I deserve it, so I want it all.
At any rate, gotta get my butt in gear, going to check the ice at the harbor.

Woodyvtwin, great job on the portable power box! X2 on retired, deserve it and want it all. When I was a kid I was a 1 bucket guy. I went through a similar career choice and icefishing absence for a few decades and jumped back in about 10 yrs ago, amazed at the changes for the better that happened in my absence. First purchase was what I call my portable convertible man cave (Shappell Rover 1) then propane heater and fishfinder. Life is good!
Just to let you know, your portable power box will easily start an ATV or snowmobile. On 2 occasions I returned to my truck after icefishing and found my truck battery dead. No one around to get a jump from so improvised. Pulled out my spare 7 aHr fishfinder battery and jumper cables, hooked them up and voilla, truck fired right up. Also lent my jumper cables to a friend who's ATV's battery was DOA at our icefishing spot and told him to use his FF battery to jump start it, NP.
Thanks for sharing your project. Enjoy a long retirement!

I also am well retired. Unfortunately they call me One Bucket Mike for a reason! Travel as light as I can but am enjoying the heck out of my short trips on the ice for the past 20 years of retirement. Cya.

You better fish local because I don't see you getting on a plane with that without a thorough pat down and some serious interrogations.

Thanks Kim, LOL, now that you've visualized it for me, it does have a suspicious bomb-like appearance. Purely unintentional, I assure you, but it would probably be due-cause to leave it at home when heading to the airport.
