Browns - Tactics
« on: Jan 23, 2019, 01:45 PM »
Recently moved back near my home turf in central Vermont, and find myself within an hours drive of several brown trout waters. I've never really spent much time targeting them, and the few I have caught over the years were by accident. Anybody willing to share some tips, i.e. water depth and bait depth, terminal tackle and type of bait? PM me if you'd like.

Have not fished for them since I lived up in the NEK and the bait rules were different. Used to catch them using suckers. I used a size 6 snelled hook so that I could thread the sucker (using an english hook needle)where the hook would curve back behind its eyes. Dead or alive on bottom to 1-2 feet off bottom. Depth didnt seem to matter.

Could probably do the same with smaller bait, but may need a smaller needle.

Anyways that's how I fished and caught browns.

Good luck !

I usually catch them on tip ups, in 30 feet of water or less. Usually  on small to medium shiners. The tip ups are usually 1-15 feet off the bottom. I also use a size 6 treble and the smallest split shot I can get away with.

Agreed. Regardless of depth, even over a hundred feet, all my browns have come from 15 feet and up.

While I have caught some nice ones on large smelt, I get most on a fat head three feet off the bottom in 30 feet of water.   On a rare occasion I have taken them jigging a bibbit.

I've caught a number of them while salmon fishing in 30 + ft of water.  Bait was always less than 6 ft under the ice.

  • Rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6.

When I used fish for them in the waterbury reservoir, best luck was 4-12' along rocky bottoms with boulders.
