FLX 28 AZ disappointment
« on: Jan 20, 2019, 05:03 AM »
So, I used to have an LX7 until it was stolen recently, and because I had to get a lithium battery to use it all day, I didn't feel like spending an extra $100 on a battery if I got another LX7, and I was using gift cards for the flasher so the battery would have been too muxh.  So, since so many people praise the FLX 28, I figured why not?

I hope I'm wrong, but I discovered something extremely annoying today with the AZ feature while looking for yellows close to the bottom in 15-55 FOW.

In AZ and Auto depth mode, hole hopping was impossible. EVERY time I moved holes, the 6' zoom side glitched out and showed a false bottom, even on the lowest gain setting.

I had to flip the dials back and forth to get a proper reading every time I changed holess.

Since it was -5 today with some nasty wind, I had big gloves on. Trying to turn the knobs was a job in itself, which made for a really frustrating day, especially since I was constantly hole hopping, changing depths etc...

So, user error, or is this a really annoying, known issue with the FLX 28?

Only time I might use use the automatic depth setting is to confirm how deep I'm fishing when I first setup, then I switch it to the next deepest manual setting.

I was changing depths from 15 to 50 fow.  Big bulky gloves in -10 wind chill temps with vex knobs dont mix well...

I've gotten soft in my approaching older age years and fish in a flip shanty majority of the time, but if I'm running tip ups during really cold, windy weather I will wear a pair of lightweight gloves under my mittens.  Pugz are the brand of lightweight glove I've been using.  Shouldn't take but a few seconds to change the depth setting and the added glove should shield your skin enough.  A pair of ragg wool gloves work well on those less windy days.

I read something in the manual this morning about not having the ducer out of the water with the power on in zoom mode or it would cause a problem. I’m not home now but I will follow up with the exact specifics when i get home

I think you're right, bummer....I guess its only an issue on super cold days when my regular gloves won't cut it.  Hopefully LP mode in the weeds works alot better than my LX7 or I will be kinda bummed.

I know the DD-100 does not function properly on low power mode ..I know the FL28 has an internal depth mode of operation ..but could be a related glitch ..

Low power mode works great in the weeds, it cuts out a lot of clutter.
