Store it in a dry place such as a Garage. I usually stand mine up and strap it to the wall. Leave some gas in it so the rings don't dry out. My manuel says to drain all the gas but in my opinion that is bad advice, I always leave gas in it.

I do just the opposite of Caroga Kid, I run mine dry and put a plastic bag over it
to keep the dust off and store it in my garage.
You can ask a dozen different people what they do and you will probably get a
dozen different answers.  My manual says to run mine dry before storage.
Just do what is comfortable to you.

When I first got mine I had full intentions of Running it dry because that's what the manuel said to do. Then I talked to my uncle who's been a Mechanic all his Life, He told me to store it with gas in it. I explained to him the manuel says to run it dry. His Response Was "Who ya gonna trust the people that sell the Parts? Or the guy that fixes Them"? That was good enough for me. I've had mine 5 years now and it's been problem free.

I do about the same thing as Cargo kid. But the one thing I do is I have it somewhat handy and with the bit protector on out in the lawn and fire it up about once a month.

I've always left gas in mine..and it's been running fine for almost 10 years now..no problems at all.  Admittedly, I do not leave but about a 1/4 tank in it....that way I can fill it with fresh gas at the start of the new season and it has never let me down yet......

we always leave gas in ours. I do recomend "gas stableizer"  keeps the gas from breaking down.  had ours for over 10 years now. still runs good.  its best if you can run them once in a while in the summer.

caroga kid: i have been wrenching on small engine for over 10 years now. Im not saying your uncle is wrong, but im not sure what leaving gas in the tank and carb, have to do with keeping the rings lubed over the summer. the only time there getting lube is when its running.   ???  ???  ???

I dunno I dont work on the things so I can't say. Maybe if you run it dry it sucks the lube outta the rings. By not running it dry maybe a little lube stays on the rings?

I was told by a mechanic that if you run the gas out the seals and diaphram could dry up and crack. I have always seft conditioned gas in mine and have had no problems. It does help if you remember to start it once in a while during the summer. I also take the plug out and spray some storage fogger into the cylinder.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I work on these small engines and have for over 30 years. Here is what I do with my auger for summer storage...NOTHING.
WHERE YOU STORE IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING . If you store it in a HOT environment the gas WILL turn to "varnish". I store mine in a cool well ventilated area that doesn't change in tempature much through the summer. Fuel stabilizers are fine..but next fall I will dump the old fuel and mix up new.
PS: Rings are metal and will not dry out , but can rust if there is moisture in the area of the stored equipment.

I also keep the gas in mine, and add a couple squirts of gas stabilizer to it.  I hang it upright on the wall in my garage and I'll pull it over a few times during the summer.  I also do the same with the snowmobile and snowblower and I've never had any problems.  I leave some room in the tank and add some fresh gas at the beginning of the season.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

I am an ASE Certified mechanic, and also OPE (Outdoor Power Equipment)certified mechanic.  So I beleive I have a good idea of what I'm talking about.  When storing any gas engine, either run the fuel out, or use fuel stabilizer.  gas left in the tank, lines, carb, can gum up causing you problems.  It would also be a good idea to fog the engine.

I bought my power auger as an 8" Earthquake post holer auger.  I sent to Ardisam
(the company that makes them) and got an Eskimo ice auger to convert the powerhead.  In the summer I use it to dig postholes for decks and it works like a charm.

YO   big ice when are you going to get rid of that heavy sucker and go with a light one like mine.  if you drilled post holes with it all summer like I do you wouldn't need to store it. mine works great as a post hole digger. but am afraid the clutch won't hold out for another season.   may have to borrow yours.  oh yea ice is still on the lake but unsafe. chucked out a few hand grenade size rocks the other day.  went through.  won't be long before we can do the boat thing.

Keyholeiceman,
My auger is not that heavy you just need to start pumping some iron.
Also did you notice when we have been out fishing I have you drilling all the holes. Just because you are older doesn't mean your smarter.
After using your auger the other day you can tell you have been using yours to dig post holes. Abused and Missused.
Everytime I go out in the garage the boat has moved closer to the door. I think its ready to go.
My Pike took 1st place. I am a little surprised. not complaning just surprised. I thought someone would get one longer. But maybe not heavier.

I'm confused keyholeiceman... you use your ice auger to drill post holes?  I'll bet that really does a number on the blade, or do you have a separate auger for digging in the dirt?
It's no wonder your clutch is getting ready to go... that should be a hint that your drastically overloading it!     My Jiffy just passed it's 12th year, same original everything, (except spark plug), and it's still going strong.

yep I sure do.  didn't change the auger. just the blades when they get worn. mine is an old magnum can't remember when I bought it back in the middle 80,s. I don't recomend it but it is all I had.  was really hoping that if I wore it out last summer. my wife would let me buy one of the new fancy ones.  would really love to have one of the new 4 cycle. No such luck however  that old sucker is as stubborn as  big ice,  never gives up. So as soon as the ground thaws here. We are going to be back out there digging holes.  only have about 500 more feet of split rail fence to go. have already put in almost 1/4 mile with it.
