« on: Dec 08, 2018, 11:44 PM »
I will mostly be fishing for panfish/perch this season, and im not sure what line to use. Im thinking 1-4# but im not certain. Any advice? What brands do you guys trust? Im willing to spend good money on good line. All advice is appreciated!

I use Berkley Micro Ice. 2# Gold on my Schooley reels,  3# green on my spinning and 4# gray on a deadstick rod. Last season I tried the orange Suffix and didn't like it.

Variety because not one brand is superior in all respects

There will be first availability, because if you're going fishing and need line suddenly, what's available?
Second is line properties, because based on line strength alone, doesn't always mean that it will have good knot strength or line manageability.  There's always a balance to it.
Third is application.  Yes it's fishing line, but really the nuance of line behavior based on equipment used makes subtle differences.  Noodle rod plus stretchy line...well sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not so good.  Stiff rod plus "no" stretch line...sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not so good.

My one favorite currently is ASSO Micron3.

What didn’t you like about the Suffix? Just wondering.

So when using FC leaders, is there a benefit to a swivel? Im terrible at most knots besides a palomar, so if swivels are good, im down for it.

Not sure that I can put my finger on it. Although to me it doesn't seem as supple as Berkley. I think I also am use to looking at the bright green line which is easier for me see.

The core benefit of a swivel is to prevent your line from twisting. I use a size 12 Black Stainless Steel Rolling Swivel.  To connect line to line i use the double Uni Knot with practice you can tie it super fast... Also if you are going to use a swivel and use a palomar knot tie the leader to the swivel first.. it maybe common sense but if you tie that swivel to your main first you will feel stupid like i did one day lol

I use fireline or power pro with a FL leader and connect with a #12 Mustad swivel.

only thing I have a problem with is my darn stinking eyes make it hard to get the tiny line through the eye! No worries was going to upgrade my electronics, instead I just spent the price of a new helix ice 5 on some new glasses. :( Had lasik done 25 years ago I guess it was time.

I'm rethinking the comment that I made about Suffix. I fished it quite a bit today and I didn't have any issues.

I use 3-4# for pan fish and Suffix Ice Magic has worked well for me and won't break the bank.  Fireline was the worst line I have ever used.   I like the Berkley Micro Ice also.  I get orange and green when possible to make it easier to see.  I tried 1 # and 2# last year and they were just too lite.

P-line year round in multiple poundages. I don't buy ice fishing specific line, I think it is a money scam. But that's a story for another time.
