Jigging Questions
« on: Nov 21, 2018, 09:50 AM »
Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone could offer a few tips on jigging. My friends and I are all def taught ice fishing wise and have had great experience with tip ups but not too much using rod and reel. I want to catch more of anything through the ice and any tips would be appareciated.

The ponds/lakes we frequent have sunfish/bluegill, perch, bass, pickerel, and a few of them have crappie.

Tight lines!

Thin as possible line, small jigs, small twitches.  You will have to some experimenting when you start marking them.  Drop jig down slowly by them.  If nothing, drop into mud and jig right off bottom.  If nothing, jig just above them slightly then let it sit.  Mid season panfish get very dormant, so small motion, small presentation is a must.  No line twist as well.  Make sure plastic is sitting horizontal (what I do anyways).  If nothing, go with live bait like spikes.  Still nothing then try different color.  Mid season panfish can be very tough..

I agree with the above. Look up Dave Genz videos especially about "pounding" its the most subtle of movements but it definitely has upped my game.

Also note that where your knot is on the jig affects how it hangs in the water. I like my knot to be so that the jig will hang perfectly horizontal.

:)Hey all! Question regarding knot placement. I've heard that a drop of Super Glue will secure the knot so the jig will hang horizontal. I've not tried this yet. Wondering if the glue will make the mono leader brittle causing break offs and will the smell of the glue be off putting. Anybody noticing these things?

idk if this has been mentioned yet, but the best advice i've ever been given that i'll pass on here....do less!  less is more!  If you think you're not moving the lure enough, move it LESS!  you get the idea haha.  obviously not always the answer, but i've been out many times where i won't get touched unless i'm using as small a lure as possible (i.e. tiny dot jig tipped with bug) and moving it as little as possible!  tap it on the bottom or jiggle it a few times and then just hold it there as still as possible for 10, 20, or even 30 seconds.

get yourself a flasher if you dont have one yet. instantly you will catch more fish plus over time you will learn a ton about jigs, jig motion, bait, plastics etc. and what the fish respond and dont respond to.

I haven’t seen anyone mention spring bobbers yet. They are strike indicators to help detect the light bites, and they allow for finessing the jig a little better with small wrist movements, almost like a little mini shock absorber. Lot of other good suggestions here too.

Sometimes you catch more fish on a jig with a mousie or spike and not jigging at all.  Sometimes color, style and/or size make a difference.
