Non lighted tip up sensors
« on: Jan 13, 2019, 09:28 PM »
I've been using the Frabill orange tip up lights for night walleye fishing.  They work great, but they also tell everyone within a half mile that you're catching fish.  I'm looking for tip up sensors that don't light up as an alternative.  A few weeks ago, we fished a new area where nobody had fished before, and we lit it up.  2 nights later, we were joined by another 18 guys.  I'm done with that!
I've heard of blue tips, mixed reviews.
Strike sensors, don't know much about.
Vulture Systems.  Might be the one I'm going with, but the most expensive.  Claim to have a one mile range on the ice, impressive.

Any other products out there that will work for this application??

Can you just put reflective tape on your flags,  hit them with a flashlight to see if they're up

Absolutely, you can do that.  But when you're fishing in a residential area, some of the folks don't appreciate the constant light attack!
I also like to spread my tip ups out a long ways.  Finding them with a light every 10 minutes can be a pain is the *ss.

Bluetipz will be able to be used in "stealth mode" when their new app rolls out any day now. I haven't had the chance to give mine a proper test in order to recommend them or not, but from my around the house testing, they seem reliable at distance when used with their receiver/booster and my phone. Their price sure makes them more appealing than the other radio options.

I have both BlueTipz and Vulture Systems. I’ve had the BlueTipz for several years and just got the Vulture.  The Vulture has much much greater range.  Vulture is radio and BT uses Bluetooth. You can extend the range of the BT by using their receiver as a booster half way between alarm and your phone. But you still do not get close to the range of the Vulture.   Both have their pros and cons. I personally like the Vulture better because of it’s range and trigger mechanism.  If range is not an issue then BlueTipz is smaller, has the phone app and have held up well for several seasons, but currently do light up.

have no idea what they look like, but what about using heat shrink tube and make a hole in it so you can aim the hole to where you stay. keep the tube loose enough so you can aim it.

For what it's worth, I tested bluetipz out today at about 120 yards and it worked great. The receiver / booster was past me at closer to 130 yards and my phone was in my coat pocket. I'm happy and will probably buy a couple more if I can get them at a discount at the end of the season. We're only allowed 3 lines in WI, but I wouldn't mind having a couple more for friends or my kids.

I've had Strike Sensors for a LONG time. They work great. With any kind if you cover or turn off the light and you keep them a long way away as you said, how you going to know which one is up. (unless they are close to each other.)
