Hard ice or soft ice?
« on: Feb 15, 2018, 07:15 PM »
I tried out my auger today after sharpening it. It cut a lot better than before but then I was thinking about how soft the ice was. I know from playing shinny as a kid that the ice gets quite soft at temps just above freezing. But does it get significantly harder as it goes from just below freezing to ,say, 15-20 below freezing? I tried to find some info online but didn't find much info at all.

Anybody else seen such info.?

Found this from Emporia state University, in Kansas I think.

The hardness of ice varies with temperature. At 0°C, ice has a hardness of 1.5 on the Mohs scale; at -70°C the hardness is 6 (Nesje and Dahl 2000). ...

I always pay to have my blades professionally sharpened. Everyone I know whoever attempted to sharpen their own blades ended up regretting it. You literally have to know what you are doing when sharpening your blades. If you do it wrong you'll ruin the blades. I hope you were lucky and your blades are sharp. I actually send my bales to FISH307.com. I have been very pleased with their blade sharpening service.
