Tip Up line breaking.
« on: Jan 11, 2018, 07:42 PM »
3 times this season I’ve lost fish due to my tip up line breaking. When I’m done fishing for the day I always hook my hooks into the spool of line until next time. This has caused my tip up line to fray and eventually break, ( I haven’t changed my line for years). I just bought new line for my tip ups but where do you put your hooks between trips to prevent line damage?

on my cheap polar tip ups I glued some foam on them for hooks.now I run beaver dams and they have hook keepers on them.you can also cut off a section of foam handle off a broken  fishing rod and put it on the shaft of the tip up.done that too.

Lay the hook on the line and use a Velcro wrap, been doing this for 5 years and never a problem.

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I use 30 or 50 pound braided daycron on my tip ups and CHANGE IT every year. I use varying size leaders, usually 8 0r 10 pound flurocarbon and change it every couple of weeks. Length is a couple feet to maybe 6 feet.  I have been out 10 times already this season so it is important to me to keep up on my tackle maintainence. My experence with brake offs is nearly 0 over the past few years.  Polomar knot.

In a pinch, braided fly line backing works very well too and is pennies a yard. I like the brilliant green color, makes me think the fish are bitting better.

I like the beaver dam hook holders or a cork screwed into the opposite end of the spool

i use old vitamin or spice containers.  cut a little notch in the threaded part for your line to pass through, stuff the rig in the container and screw the lid on.  voila.  patent pending.

I glued pieces of cork to each of my tip ups. I put the hook points into the cork. I also put a rubber band mourned each spool to prevent tangles.

I have Beaverdams, but have never used the hook holders. The Velcro wrap works well.

I've got Velcro with washers attached to them. Put the hook through the washer and wrap the Velcro around the spool back to itself. Works great.

Just the Velcro works too and if it's the stick type 1mofish's set up with little eye hooks in the top and rubber bands is pretty slick

I've used rubber bands, and they work fine, but the rubber does degrade over time and they will break.
I'm trying some Velcro tape (stuff used for gardening) and we'll see how that fares on the winter.

I still have rubber bands in my tackle bag "just in case"...

I have always used rubberbands to secure the hook.

The only 2 down sides to using rubber bands are that they WILL degrade and eventually snap (usually at the wrong time) and they can get frozen to the hook and line when wet and freezing out.

Other than that they are an effective and inexpensive solution.

I use rubber bands as well. Cheap and always have a bag of them with me just in case one breaks.

I put the quick connect snaps at the end of my tip up lines in the downrigger clips that I have screwed into the bottom of my tip ups.  My hooks stay attached to the single strand wire leaders that get wrapped around a piece of pool noodle.  No mess but it takes a little longer to set up and tear down with this method.

I put a strip of foam rubber  on the end of the tip up and hold it on by wrapping it around the tip up with electrical tape. Has held for years like that.

Rare earth magnet, counter sunk, stuck to the nut/screw holding the spool on.  Works really slick.

Thanks Mr. Obvious!  I never made the connection.  Every now and then I'll have one break a couple of feet from the leader and never really thought about why.  I just figured I wasn't changing my line often enough.  Guess I'd better start experimenting with some of those suggestions and stop tucking the hook into the line. :o

On my Polars I wind everything up and secure the hook on the line guide. See the pic on how to keep the spool from unwinding and secure the shaft to the frame. Note the hook position in the top left pic (orange bead just above hook).

If you feel the need to keep the leader portion straight that's a little different problem but this solution could possibly be adapted for that as well.
