I have been raising them for my koi and turtles...now that winter hit i have a ton going and figured the pupae look like pretty good bait.  Straight mealworms haven't done much for me aside from trout and occasional bluegills.

My waxies didn't show up yet so i sorted out a bunch of pupae and figured give them a shot. Ill see what happens.  Thanks for the responses

They always worked for me.  I do find it very hard to keep them on the hook.  Now I'm normally using them at the start of spring and casting them, so probably much easier through the ice.

They do put out a nice cloud of goo.

Here is what you do...

Go get a container of mealworms at local baitshop or Walmart...etc.  Get 4 shoebox sized storage containers from lowes or home depot or something like that, get some wheat bran (bakers bran) or oatmeal.  Put about 1 inch or so of wheat bran or oatmeal in one of the contaiers and then put a 3x3 inch piece of aluminum foil in on top with 1 or 2 baby carrots.  I then put it in a closet where it's warm and dark.  If there aren't any beetles already give it a few days to a week and you should have a couple.  Put them in a different container with some food, aluminum piece and a couple carrots.  Leave beetles in a container by themselves for about a week or two and then put the living ones in a new container.  This allows them time to lay eggs and then get them out of there because they tend to eat eggs if they are hungry.  At any given time, I have 3-5 boxes going with 1000s of mealworms in 3 of them and 1 with pupae or beetles.  That way the population is stocked well.  I tend to not use them for fishing but feeding birds - cardinals, chickdees, bluebirds and woodpeckers.  It's very easy but you need to make sure you are on top of things and clean out the "frass" mealworm poop ever so often so it doesn't stink in the closet.  I've been asked by local garden shops to ramp up so they can buy live mealworms but just haven't done it.

They look like shrimp with a pointed tail.  Worms - look like worms...then they go into the pupae stage where their outside shell hardens and they look completely different.  Then they morph into a dark beetle.
