Transducer

I rigged my hummingbird helix 5 portable for ice fishing just by using the open water transducer.  It hangs close to level in the ice hole.  For the sonar to work properly does it have to hang perfectly level in the water??
Thx

It doesn't need to be exactly perfectly level, but the closer the better.  If it's pointed at an angle then you will end up with more of the coverage area off to one side of where your jigging.  That unit has fairly wide cone angles so I wouldn't sweat it too much.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

I just made my Elite 3x transducer to work for Ice fishing.  I used to use Photo Bucket but I can't post pictures with it anymore. What you do is loop your cable in a circle and using 2 zip ties it hangs level. One zip tie goes throw the hold the transducer bolts on and the other just zip ties to the cable.  Hmm Maybe this will work.

Now mount a red solo cup around the ducer and it's tangle free!

I was wondering if I could do this with my open water transducer. The ice transducer that came with the Lowrance ice pack I bought has a short in the cable about 2 inches above the transducer. But I sent Lowrance an email Friday night and today I already received an email from them and they are sending me a replacement transducer. Yay! Anyway,  I was going to modify the transducer before I found this thread. Do you need to add a fuse to the red wire? I don't have one of those inline fuse holders yet.

I have no idea how lefty got that to work, I tried pulling one of my HDSI transducers from the boat last winter and the cable was so stiff I could hardly bend it. When warm they are pliable enough to hang pretty level, in the winter i have a feeling there would be no chance of it hanging level. The humminbird cables are much better suited for hanging a skimmer transducer for ice fishing.

Fuse on the positive power wire? Yeah you should be using it. Probably don't need it if you are careful and don't short it or hook the cables up reverse polarity.
