Soldering a VEX transducer?
« on: Dec 20, 2017, 10:07 PM »
Last year I purchased a tri-beam transducer, unfortunately somehow I managed to cut it half, not sure if it was from carry it around with the puck dangling or something else, was a clean cut whatever the case be.
So I'm wondering has anybody had this happen & soldered the wires back together? If so did it work after the same as before?
Thanks in advance for the responses.

sounds like an auger cut.

it will be very hard to have it aim correctly if you can solder it back up is the worst problem you'll have. how far up is the cut? if you can get enough wire exposed  it should be do-able. maybe better off for a hull mount ducer tho that doesn't need the cable to act like a plumb bob any more.

I haven't ever cut mine but if I did I would also use electronic grease and heat shrink to help seal water out.

A few years ago I got a marcum showdown for x-mas. I was so excited, and got it right out of the box and on the charger with the intention of going out to try it in a day or so. The next morning I noticed that the transducer was no longer attached to the rest of the unit because my cat had chewed the cord in half! So... after having a moment, I called marcum to find out my “options”. $95.00 for a new transducer and two weeks later it worked great.
Come on fish!

tried one time on a Lawrance lcd unit.
the one i tried to fix, years ago, had some funky woven wires in it and made it impossible to solder back the way it was.  and no it didnt work for me.  careful what you do too sending all that power back to unit in the wrong wire could ruin it!  vex ducer cant be that much.

I have actually been able to splice my cable back together. Just expose all the wires best you can and tie/twist back together and finish with electrical tape. Had to do this...twice...due to cat biting through cable. Must have smelled the fishies. Has been out of reach since then.

I think I would have used those cats for chum! But lesson learned not to leave mine sit out around the wife's cat.

This is the horse and the hound and the horn
That belonged to the farmer sowing his corn
That kept the rooster that crowed in the morn
That woke the judge all shaven and shorn
That married the man all tattered and torn
That kissed the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.

Whew! See where this could go!

Some automobile cables are coated with plastic made out of soybeans that taste good to mice sp they go in your truck and chew them up.
Maybe some have fish oil in the plastic that cats like.
God only knows what stuff is made out of these days

Go to the Vexilar web-site. If there's 4 inches or more of good cable they can repair it. $15 + S&H.

I would be soldering it without a doubt!
The very worst case scenario if it doesn't fix it is it will still be broke!
As it is now you totally can't use it. You at least have a fighting chance to save it if you at least try.

Maybe not exactly applicable as it wasn't a Vex transducer, but I was able to successfully fix one on a Lowrance my boat that got chopped by my trolling motor mount.  Inside the main insulation were 5 or 6 very, very tiny wires.  I added an appropriately sized piece of marine heat shrink to the large outer wire, then went to work on the interior wires.  I stripped these small inner wires back about an inch on each side of the cut, put marine heat shrink on, formed each side into a  "U" shape, interlocked them, then twisted the wires back on themselves as much as I could.  I then applied solder over the interlocked wires to seal them together and applied the heat shrink.  After all the inner wires were done, I coated them lightly with liquid electrical tape.  Once that was dry, I applied the heat shrink I slid over the outer wire at the very beginning.  Finally, in an episode of almost certain overkill, I wrapped over everything with electrical tape.

It was pretty darn tedious, but it's been working perfectly for two years without issue.  It was a case where the thing was junk if I didn't fix it anyway, so there was no harm in trying.  Saved myself $100 by managing to get it to work.
