Just got Sadie 2 days ago, 8 months old, very well behaved so far and seems to love being outside.... went for a ride today checking spots and when I shut the truck off at the bait store she literally hopped from the back seat to my lap waiting for me to open the door..... I think She’d have fun and will give it a try.... I have a few spots where I’ll drill 6-8 holes wide, spaced 3-5 paces apart, and 6-8 holes deep starting shallow and progressing deeper..... I like the idea of her staying on a leash in the
Middle ..... thanks to everyone for sharing.... a few of the posts I had to laugh.... good luck and tight lines this winter.

Some of my favorite times on the ice was with my Chessie! he absolutely loved ice fishin! I've got pictures of him in "fish finder mode" past his ears in the ice hole lookin for the one I just threw back! Fishin on clear ice where he could see the fish I'm fighting right under his feet would draw a crowd! Hmm... funny how writing about something so good can bring tears to my eyes! DAMN...I miss him!

Just keep in mind they can pull a muscle slipping on the ice just like us. The only way I would do it is dog in complete control and not bothering others.

Anybody have a dog that is afraid to go into an ice shanty with them? I have an Akita that is like that.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

I thought about borrowing my dads bull mastiff to pull my gear onto the ice. but that thing drools to much but just lays around pretty much.lol,my dobe is way too hyper and loves to run,run and run, so she stays home.

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I knew a guy and I took him fishing with me ONCE. He asked  about a dogt, and I said yes and then he showed up with a great dane.  First hole I drill and the dog (horse in a dog suit) takes a big 'ol dump by my hole.  I don't take the guy or his horse fishing, and I screen my participants more wisely.

I’m sure it wasn’t at the time, but that’s funny right there.... One of those trips you can look back at after a while and laugh.

Last Spring had gone to Saginaw Bay, MI.  My Pal setup about 50 yards away, we stayed in touch via Texting.  Then CRAZY THICK FOG rolled in.  I stayed put but he and his GF and Dog kept moving around.  After 2 hours he asked me to yell his name so he can find us again.  Via Text he said he could NOT hear me.  I then yelled the Dogs Name and Yelled HERE, over and over, the Dog barked and led them back to us Safely!!!  They were so turned around and said they walked few miles just to get back to us.  I used my GPS TRACE ROUTE to get us back to Shore.  The Dog was named was MONEY and that day the Dog was Priceless :)

Wake Up you Guys!
If your hound shows up in my area and lifts his leg on my boot or my tip-up he's fair game for a kick in the testicle zone. If he's just coming over looking for a egg, sausage and cheese on a bagle then pull up a log and join the boys.

I love dogs. I've owned hunting dogs since I was 7 years old. It's one thing having a well behaved dog on the ice and having a she devil on the ice. One guy would bring his little Jack Russell that enjoyed tearing up my flopping slab crappie. He would sit there and laugh. Had to adjust and put them directly into a bucket. He couldn't catch a fish if he was fishing in my bucket but he sure did enjoy his dog tearing up my fish. We know longer fish together. Another guy would bring his lab,and I think he trained it to retrieve fish from my pile to his. lol It was a nice e dog but ate anything in sight, including dead minnows, maggots waxies or your lunch .lol I think there's a time and place for dogs on the ice just not around me.
