CATCH THAT SHANTY!!!!!
« on: Nov 25, 2017, 05:02 PM »
Last year I was in my shanty all nice and comfy. And then it began. The wind started to pick up and I decided to anchor the shanty down with my 8 inch ice anchors. So sitting there listening to the wind whip around outside, I all of a sudden hear this pop and......wooooshhh there goes my shanty rolling like a tumbleweed across the ice. It pulled all 8 of my anchors from the black ice mind you, solid ice. There I go running across the ice, no cleats, yelling to anyone in the direct path of this bullet with swinging death spikes. Some guy dove into my shanty and still couldn't stop it. Of course it wouldn't blow towards land. It was heading for the middle of the lake. Finally a guy managed to grab hold of one of the anchor lines and stopped it and the guy riding inside. Meanwhile I'm still running to catch up slipping and busting my butt on the ice every 5-6 strides. I get to those two guys and they are crying from laughter. Never seen anything so funny in my life till that day. Ahhh the joys of fishing the hardwater.

Wow  :o. That's quite a story, funny I suppose, after the fact.

Many years ago I was fishing on lower Lake Champlain north of Putnam Station a few miles  where you could rent a shanty.  It was very very windy, hardly anyone out.  The shanty rental guy took you out to the shanty with a tractor and hay wagon.  There were lots of shanties but very few were actually occupied.  We saw smoke coming from one and went over to chat.  Turns out he had been cooking bacon and had tossed the grease out on the ice in front of his shanty.  The combination of wind and bacon grease on the boots (no creepers) made for an interesting day - we had to crawl around on the ice to void being blown away.  And two or three unoccupied shanties were seen rumbling southwards down the lake towards Whitehall.  No flags at all, a total waste of time.

lol! yeah, I chased my clam across the ice one time. I had it set half way for a wind break. A buddy hooked a nice fish and I got up to help with it. We were working the fish when the wind gusted and we heard a crash as my flip shelter ran over my gear and headed across the lake like it had a motor on it, LOL! And yup, I didn't have my spikes on! I was slipping and falling and laughing so hard. Finally a couple guys tackled it and held it until I got there and they were laughing too. Fun times!

oh, my buddy got the fish!  ;D

If it is that windy...  I'll be home enjoying some meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, dinner rolls. Then followed up with coffee and pie.

Sheppard's Pie is an excellent second option for this situation also.  ;D

Great stories all...

It feels cruel to say it, runaway portables have been near or on the top of my most funny list.. Extra points for the guy that just hangs on skating behind it..

Used to see it a lot more before ice anchors (became commonplace when hubs came out) were common, and suitcase shanties were used more...

On Lake Erie, I've seen some funny stuff, most of it is never seen again, at least by Americans... Buckets, auger covers, minnow bucket lids, bye bye...

It could happen.. when its sunny, the anchors melt the ice and expand their hole, ive had them just literally fall out cause the hole melted..

I've allways said I bought my flip over to protect me from the wind so I could go on crappy days but I'm with Bart. If it's that bad my wife makes a great venison meatloaf

I keep (6) 16" pieces of rebar and a 1/2" drill bit in the sled.  We watched a hut fly across Chautauqua Lake at Mayville 4 or 5 years ago - it went a good 1/2 mile - funny as hell watching guys tackle it but still felt sorry for the owner - since then - I keep anchor posts, a drill bit, and ratchet straps in the sled.  4 posts around the sled and 2 out to anchor points into the wind.  I almost got blown off of Simcoe Lake Canada 2 years ago -  I spent most of the day on poor fishing but afraid of getting off the seat of the hut once the wind really kicked up and I was already anchored down - Thankfully the wind died down mid afternoon.
Usually I don't even take my stuff off the Smitty Sled until I drill some kind of anchor point for my pull rope.  Anyone else do the same?

I always strap the windy side to my Atv. I’ve had the ice anchors pull before also. I have switched from using the screw type anchors to a type that grips the walls of an 8 inch hole. Drill a hole ,  but not deep enough to hit water. Drop the anchor in and yank up on it and they grip the hole.  They work great. I got sick of trying to screw in bent anchors!

I take one of my wife's old hollow mop handles that has a hang loop on the end. I tie a 3 foot length of rope to the loop end. I drill a hole in the middle and attach another length of rope through it. You drill a hole by the trap, hang on to both ropes and drop it down the hole. Pull it back with the center line and it locks under the ice and tie the shanty to it. When you are done fishing you allow the handle to drop down and pull it through the hole with the rope attached to the loop end. Use 2 if you want the shanty anchored on both ends.

I actually don't even use them much because I am with Bart.

Great story LOL. I have been lucky to never have a shanty take off very far on me so far. One day I went with a friend in a 2 man fish trap, so we had a jet sled with a bunch of extras in it. The fishing was hot and the wind was blowing 30-40. After changing out a 1 lb. propane bottle in the heater I threw the empty one back in a bucket that was in the jet sled and hurried back to get my lines down again. A few minutes later we heard a noise and looked out to see the bucket hauling the mail across the ice. We watched it for as long as we could see it and it only hit the ice a few times in a half mile or so before it hit the shore. Luckily there was nobody in the path of the flying missile

for a  safety anchor   cut  a  piece of  2x4 twice  the  size  of  your  hole ...8 inch  hole  cut it  16 inches  drill  holes  on  both  ends   run a  rope  threw the   holes   and  tie  in a  loop then  take  a  d  ring  and  snap it  on    when  you  get to  where  your  going to  fish if the  wind is  bad   drill a  hole  behind  your  shanty   and   drop  the  2x4  in  it  will  float up and  when  you  pull on the  rope  it  will be  solid   now  attach  your  drag  rope  to  the  d ring  too  pull the  shant  tight and  drill your   holes  to  fish  ....one  more thing

cost of korkers  about  60 bucks   cost  of a   broken  leg  or  head trama ..........  get the idea

I've tried the the 2-by anchor concept once before with a Clam Nanook in the past. Did not know how big to make the 2-by, and had trouble because it was only 2" longer than the width of the hole. Thanks for sharing!
