Bells on tip-ups
« on: Feb 06, 2005, 10:44 AM »
Does anyone use bells on their tip ups. I use both fold up cross type tip ups w/o bells and bellson the type with the spinning croos piece that trips the flag. On the extra piece of threaded shaft above the trip bar I have attached a spring from a click type pen and a large bells to the spring. Oh does this work pissa.

Anyone else crazy like me w/ bells?        ???

Last year I went to the dollar store and bought a bag of large jingle bells. I used wire to attach the bells near the flag on my ht polar tip ups. It is good if you are fishing about 10 feet away from the tip-up but any further you will not hear it. Also if there is wind or any noise (such as those Da## Snowmobilers ;D) you will not hear them. My opinion: after a year of using them I took them off. They are not worth it. You need something the size of a cow bell to hear it and they are just a little too heavy :P

I use them on my more heavy duty tip-ups but like was said, unless you're close by you won't hear them. I use the ones that Walmart sells that clip onto rod tips.

I use the mini cow bells that I get at the craft shop. 3/$1. They work well for both day and night fishing. If the wind is blowing hard, you need to be down wind to hear them.

I was thinking maby getting them little strobe lights that go onto the ricer rims, or motorcycle rims that light up. When the flag is up, you will see the lights in the air, I think i'll give this a whirl for night fishing.

I put them on recently work great on quiet days but like others have said aren't worth a dam when it is windy. They are quite noisy at 5am when I am trying to sneak out to go fishing. Sounds like Santa Clause's sleigh. ;D

Have seen guys use them and heard them, you do have to be close. Also have use reflective tape on the flags to see um up at night. Just use a light and the tape will tell you.
GOOD LUCK and let us know how it works.

I use a personal allarm purchased from radio shack($4.00).they are a shrilling siren sound and are very loud.It is small and triggers by a key ring being pulled out.this way there is no need to watch any flags.i attach the key ring to my handle on the spool.when the spool spins the key ring pulls out thus tripping the allarm siren.
