Nice.  The net is ideal over rod and reel.  Not many know but those goldens have a very interesting way of letting each other know something is not right.

"Like other minnows, golden shiners are sensitive to the release of an alarm substance, or schreckstoff, contained within special skin cells. If a predator catches and bites into a minnow, the skin is broken, the substance is released, and other minnows in the vicinity can detect the substance and react to it by leaving the area"

You have to be careful to avoid beating them up for that reason!

i dunno. Ive tossed the cast net toss after toss and still come up with them. saves so much time over rod and reel. i thought for sure i was going to get one toss and they would be gone, but that wasn't the case.

Nice job, I tried last year all over this area and couldn't find anywhere good for goldens!

Xj I was suggesting the net is the way to be.  When you are hooking them that causes the release of that chemical.

Papa...early am and evening on calm days.  Typically if you see a large number of dimples on the surface that almost look like rain thats usually them.

I stopped using them personally for bait that is oilier and not as readily used.  The amount of guys using goldens for pike has skyrocketed over the years.  Certainly not the only pike bait!

they seem to have disappeared from my spot. In Oct and first of Nov, I had no problem catching them. used galvi trap floating just under the surface and then adjusted to various depths. only got a few in the trap in Oct. all the rest that I have gotten were caught on rod/reel. the place was barren as of 2nd week of Nov. This happened last year too. where did they go?

we seem to find the bait in our pond in the same area during open water and ice. They don't seem to go anywhere. hopefully because the pond is so full there is no where to go!  ;D
