New places to try this winter
« on: Dec 01, 2017, 11:34 AM »
Well, we've turned the page on the calendar and now it says December (even though with temps in 50's today and this weekend--doesn't fee like it in SW Iowa!) time to start really thinking about hard water fishing

I am wanting to branch out and try some different places this winter through the ice. Here are some locations I'm hoping to get a chance to fish through ice this winter.

Summitt Lake near Creston
Farm Creek-- east of Council Bluffs
Hacklebarney Ponds in Montgomery County

Black Hawk Lake near Lake View

maybe some of the borrow pits in Mills and Fremont Counties along I-29

big "Pie in the Sky" place would be to spend a couple of days out in the Sandhills of Nebraska around Valentine
and fish some of those lakes for panfish, perch and northerns, but the depends on how much time I have over Xmas break to do that.

what are some areas some of you are wanting to try?

i talked to some of the iowa dnr fisheries biologists about the borrow pits south of council bluffs along I 29 last year or year before and he said most of the ones that are public have trash fish in them from the flooding a few years ago.  most of the ones that you see with people on them ice fishing are private pits and they have prob been re stocked.

That is true! Too bad cause before the flood they were some really nice ponds to fish.
Keep it safe! JDL

I'm gonna fish the same places I always fish. West Okoboji, East Okoboji and Spirit lake.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.

I wouldn't mind hitting the Mississippi this winter. Always enjoy the IGL's. For now, I'll settle with Lake Macbride.

Little River, Rock Creek, would really like to fish squaw Creek at Red Rock as well. IGL a couple times, West lake ice out. Couple smaller underfished public waters that have giants in them.....

If you happen to wander up this way to Lake View, shoot me a message.  I'd be willing to give you some structure info!

What is the ice like in Lake View? Would like to get up there perhaps next week if there is enough.

Which wapsi backwaters do you fish?
I'm what you would call an ice fishing freak.
