I've caught sturgeon that wouldn't come up a ten inch hole..lol.

...and when I drill a clover hole, nothing bites, except the cold frost bite...

If you're catching Walleye that are difficult to pull through a 6" hole...coordinates please.

Like others have said, you might run into problems when the ice is thick or on cold days when the holes freeze over and shrink.

I agree that it's totally geography and species dependant.

Geography for hole ice up frequency and species for fish size.

I prefer 10" for our big Walleyes, Northern Pike and Sturgeon.

10" is also preferred due to our extremely low temps up here in Canuckland. Holes outside the shack tend to ice over quickly so over time holes develop a solid ice ridge around the interior perimeter of the hole. Which can reduce a 10"  hole to a 9 or 8" hole. (Same with a 8" hole shrinking down to a 7 or 6" hole.)

I do like using my 8" flight though when I'm alone, running and gunning popping a lot of holes. Purely for reduced weight and space in my pull sled.

But a 6" hole just won't cut it for the 25-32" Walleyes we get. Small trout, Cappie or perch fishing, sure. But I don't typically target those or fish water inhabited by them.
.          The 25-30”eyes u get must be bigger than I catch , have pulled many 25-30”eye thru a 6” hole, sure u can horse them out of a bigger hole, but a 6” will work most of the time, just take ur time!!  It’s not a race to see who can limit out first !!!
