Dead Stick Reels
« on: Sep 14, 2017, 11:21 AM »
I have started to dead stick more and more, wondering what reels and type of reels everyone is using. I have a couple small Okuma bait runners but I feel like the fish still feel the line. Was thinking of bait carter but am afraid the line would freeze when its cold out but would be nice to leave open with no resistance.

I run 100% in line, specifically the CGI no 8. Some guys complain bout the drag being jumpy with a big fish on, but i haven't had that issue myself. I run the CGi just because i am comfortable and familiar with them. I dont think most guys will agree with me though, just preference is all. Alot of guys talk about the pflueger president for spinning.

Check out the Okuma Avenger abf reels. They have a bait feeder switch that I know a lot of deadstick guys enjoy.

Like Dakota mentioned, I don't know about a lot of folks but the lakes I fish I run a jigging set up and one dead stick. The rod is a Fenwick and the reel is a Pflueger president 6925 that set up is good enough for the lakes I fish. Jigging is a 13 fishing tickle stick with a bb 6061 Like I said both set ups work for the lakes an fish I am after.

i bought an okuma bait feeder to try deadsticking with this year, hopefully works well.  in the past i've always caught lots just using cheap ticas and pfleugers...cheap because i like to get just far enough away from my deadstick that it gets yanked down the hole.

The Okuma baitfeeder works great, set it at the lightest setting.

I actually have 4 2 larger for pike and 2 smaller ones. Even at the lightest setting I feel like there is resistance the fish can feel and then they drop the bait. Using a spinning reel the wind grabs the line and its a mess.

I use the Okuma Avenger ABF30 reel on the lightest setting, very little resistance, even some of the baitfish I use will take a little line.

I'm sure with a rubber band you could achieve similar results ...a rocking style rod holder will work to achieve some give

I use this one in my shelter ...works well and height adjustable
