renting basic equipment
« on: Feb 19, 2017, 04:01 AM »
Hi, me and a couple of other friends wanted to get out on the ice next weekend. We have been once before with a charter but wanted to try and go on our own this time. We have standard fishing equipment but don't own the stuff needed for ice fishing, is there anywhere around Boston or Western Mass where we could rent the basic things?

Thanks!!

I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would rent fishing equipment.   You could buy a chisel and some tip-ups for under $100.

Any reason you don't want to buy equipment? It is fairly inexpensive to get into the ice fishing game.

I am in western western mass and I haven't seen a place that rents ice fishing equipment around here. Just boats.

What are the basic equipment? Ice fishing gear is on sale pretty much everywhere you go.

Try Craigslist . Always equipment for cheap there.

Many Sporting Goods stores are putting the ice fishing stuff on clearance right now. Check out your local Dick's or other sporting good dealers.

That's pretty much where I started, except without the tip ups. I didn't even know what a tip up was when I started ice fishing. We would just put our jigging poles in a holder out on the ice because the ice was making noise and we were scaaaared. Needless to say we didn't catch anything the first few times out.

Keep in mind that most retailers will be putting their remaining ice gear on sale pretty soon.

Heck, most are already displaying baseball and soccer gear, even though there isn't a field in the state that could be played on???

If you liked ice fishing that much, get your own gear and you won't have to wait to go out, except for safe ice to form!!!!!

Think of it as an investment in open water gear. Ice rods are great for kids off the dock or jigging/ slip bobber fishing directly below your boat. And the auger... Well emergency outboard is a stretch but you'll think of something with enough libations.
