I've got icetrekkers. They are okay. I wouldn't call them "cheap" just inexpensive. You could probably buy a few sets for the price of some yak trax. Haven't let me down yet just not completely sold on the quality. I'll have to abuse them a bit more first  :)

Kahtoola Microspikes gets my vote, they go on and off your boots effortlessly and have great traction on the ice.  They are expensive at $70, but if you don't have to replace them every couple of years they should be cheaper in the long run.

YOU are the only one who can decide if the ice is safe enough for you.

Pretty good info in that thread. Reminds me... I went to a friends rummage sale this summer and he gave me some Simms traction studs for I'm guessing Simms boots... it was 2 bags with about fifteen 1/4" hex head screws in each. Can't imagine what he paid for those  ::)

I have Yaktrax.  Kahtoolas are better, but Yaktrax won't tear up a carpeted ice house.

I just opened the package that showed up about a hour ago via UPS containing a pair of ice trekkers. Haven't tried them out yet. Should mention that a person should look on Amazon if they are wanting to buy these kinds of products. Often times, as was the case with these ones, the prices can't be beat. With 2 day shipping to boot. I only paid $36.55 for the pair of ice trekkers.

I have to agree on the Amazon recommendation. I picked up a pair of Korker StormJacks last year on Amazon for $45 and will never go back to "strap on" ice cleats.
