bait ? from across the river
« on: Feb 01, 2017, 12:32 PM »
So i live in the lovely state of VT where everything is regulated. How ever i fish on a few CT river set backs from time to time. My question is does NH require a bait slip of any kind. If i buy my bait on the NH side and launch from that side do I need paper work?

If you enter the river from the VT side then you need the bait certification paper. If you enter from the NH side you don't need it.

Did you know that the same size shiner is cheaper to buy in NH and that it also tastes better.

If you enter from the NH side, do you need a NH fishing license?

??? you can buy your shiners in NH (cheaper) access from NH side.  BUT, you can't bring them home without Vt. certification??
As to taste, Only Meat&Metal has tasted both Vt. and NH shiners :P  A  resident Vt. license is good from the NH side.

as long as your on the CT river west of any bridge crossings you can fish with a VT lisence. I fish the river from ice and boat all of the time and use the NH boat launches most of the time. I just wasnt sure about the bait laws.

I've heard that and I'd like to start using suckers again not the undersized overpriced glorified gold fish that this state limits us to.

Update just heard back from NH F+G sounds like im free to buy suckers in NH. It also sounds like a VT slip will get you into hot water if launching from NH side. Nice to have a solid answer.

Dear Willie,
Even though it seems counter-intuitive, technically, you would not be allowed to purchase bait fish in Vermont and bring them into NH by land as that would be illegal importation of fish.  If you want to launch from the NH side, you would need to purchase baitfish over here.  Thank you and best wishes.

Thanks for the update - I was under the impression if I was licensed in either state (like I am for NH and MA) I could bring bait fish with me in either direction (I know VT has more stringent rules).

You have way too many rules in the Republic of Vermont.

Just curious, what are you supposed to do with any unused bait in this situation?

I think they want you to throw it down the hole on whatever waterbody you are on.

I had bought bait in NY for a short ice fishing trip there - you had to maintain your receipt and unused bait was supposed to be dumped on-land... not in the water... so that you were not introducing it to the waterbody.

OK - that's what I was thinking had to be done too, at least according to how I read this rule from NH F&G Live Bait Rules:

Release of Fish (Fis 402.06)

 (a) No live fish shall be released in any waters of the state unless they shall be returned into the waters from where taken except as permitted by the executive director under a permit to release specified in Fis 805.

Wayno's usually has suckers in stock, as well (just bought some last Friday...)!

I might take a trip over tomorrow and hit the Moore I'll have to stop in. He's behind Lahouts right?

W,  Waynos is this side of Lahouts if you are coming in from the interstate, you will see his sign on the right just past the closed Mobil station.
