Chassell Bay conditions.
« on: Jan 17, 2017, 12:59 PM »
I haven't seen any updates on the ice conditions in Chassell bay . I have a couple of friends who will be in the area to fish that lake by the end of the week . Was anybody out over this past weekend that can give me the conditions? My friends are both a little older and one has trouble walking , so they use a tracked argo to go onto the ice . I know they will want to go straight out from the boat launch about three quarters of the way to the other shore . I'm not able to go and check the ice conditions myself because of other obligations . Anybody?

Mjbuck -

Was out last Saturday (Jan 15) and the ice quality was just about perfect (in my opinion) --- plenty solid and plenty thick. Many snowmobiles & quads were starting to run on the ice and the slush reported on Jan 8 had pretty much disappeared. It was a pretty easy walk for anyone to head out. Saw portables up on all sides of Pike Bay (North, South, East and West) and some permanent shanties starting to go out north of the humps.

Now, with that being said ...  we're getting quite a few warm days here, so not sure what that will do to the ice conditions by this weekend (especially top-layer above slush).  Am going to try getting out one of these evenings and can try to get you an updated report if I make it out.

Best!

Mjbuck - headed out tonight and the ice is still great.  Lots of people out and lots of machines.  Was an easy walk wherever I wanted to go.  If this keeps up, you should be in great shape for the weekend.

Best,
Ice

I hear walleye fishing has been good. How bout crappie fishing. I know normally it doesn't get better till later in the year. Haven't been out for crappie ina few years. Looking to get back into it out there.

Haven't heard any reports on crappie and haven't been fishing for them myself.  Lots of shanties on that west side, so I suppose those guys may be getting into them? ... maybe someone else has something to report.

We were out there Saturday. The slush was frozen so you could walk on it and there wasn't much snow on top. There was about 2" of ice, 5" to 6" of water, and then another 3" to 4" of ice underneath.   I don't know what is going to happen with the warm, above freezing all night, weather predicted the next couple of nights. I would still be nervous taking a machine on the ice. There were a lot of people driving out there though.
