Ice fishing opportunities around Buena Vista
« on: Jan 04, 2017, 01:54 PM »
I am expecting to spend a couple weekends in Buena Vista towards the end of January/early Feb. I was thinking about heading up to Taylor Park to drill a few holes and try to catch some fish. In case that doesn't work out can someone give me a few other places close to Buena Vista that might be good to try? I'm from Nebraska and have am not real familiar with Colorado lakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

TP isn't a great close option. Cottonwood pass closes in the winter so the drive would be around 2 hrs from BV. Consider Twin lakes, Turquoise, and Clear creek res. Google map is your friend

Thanks so much for the info. You are probably right about the drive around to Taylor Park. I have only been there in the summer so it was a quick drive from BV. Thanks for the other names. It is tough to know just by looking at a map if the lakes are open to ice fishing or more private. We had a pretty good weekend here. Lots of pike and perch. Had a good time playing around with the camera. I would post a picture but can't seem to figure out how to do it on this forum.

The colorado fishing atlas is a great place to start when looking for fishing opportunities.  It may also include links to the fish surveys and stocking reports, if there are any.

Papa-- those are all good suggestions for places to hit near Buenie ( b-you-nee). Cottonwood Lake and Clear Creek are rich with stocker trout if you're just looking to catch some fish. Twin Lakes can produce but has always been kinda tough for me. The ice is tricky there. Don't know about Turquoise except that it's real deep so you'll need electronics. Used to carry kokanee. I think you'd be about 45 minutes from Elevenmile which has the biggest trout in the State but tends to kick the behinds of even those of us that know it well. Now let's talk about those tasty perch you have there locally. At any rate, you're most welcome and have a good trip. Mount Princeton Hot Springs nearby is a nice place to unwind.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Right on about Twin Lakes, and although Clear Creek has a good population of catchable rainbows and Kokes, there is a definite gill-lice issue. It doesn't mean the fish aren't edible, just that they look kind of nasty. Turquoise has a good population of lakers and trout, and the access is fairly easy off the dam. Good Icing! Ski

Thanks again. The CO Fishing Atlas is a real help. I think I'll do a little research on Turquoise. That looks like it could be fun. I have the electronics. And I'll talk Perch anytime Stinky. The nice size ones aren't all that easy to find. How do cameras work out there? I would think the water clarity would be pretty good. They have their limitations but I have been enjoying watching the fish. It gives you a chance to play keep away from the little ones. I am guessing that if Turquoise is really deep there might not be enough light.
