They've been putting them in for 4 years now some state and some private funding stocking, they, like every fish in that lake took right off as far as growing at a terrific rate per year,I seen them up to 26"-27" already.

has anyone been out on otsego this week end, how is the ice? I'm going to try for sunday if the ice holds up.if i get there and it doesn't look good i will probably shoot over to big pond. 13" of ice on big pond, it will take more then a couple of 60 degree days to melt that ice.

I was the one who fell in at 3 mile yesterday. There was about 6 inches of ice in the morning when we went out, and about 50 guys out there. By the time we were going home the ice had honey combed and I fell in about 5 or 6 times. My buddies had a rope and pulled me out, saved my life. After I got out a women at the house on 3 mile point called the police and an ambulance. (If anyone knows her please thank her for me) They brought in the hover craft but the 12 guys still out there made it safely to shore by going to the opposite side. Every one made it out safe, but it just goes to show you how quick good ice can turn deadly, Next year I will be much more careful. Always fish with a buddy!

i was st three mile friday night at around midnight. me and my buddy figured we would camp out in the truck with the mild night temps.Get ahead start on the fishing figured there would be a crowd on saturday. We went on to the lake to the right of the point with a hand auger  a rope and a flashlight drilled 1 hole 10 feet from shore got 5 inches went out another 10 feet found  3 inches  . thank god   i had enough sense to leave and head to schroon lake for the last of my fishing. As much as i wanted to fish otsego the ride from albany to otsego then to schroon doesnt seem so painfull now .  im gad that no one got seriously injured  or killed yesterday. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut and be chicken  my fishen partners thanking me know for not trusting the ice there.   SOUNDER

Saturday was EXTREMELY SCARY out there.  I knew I was going through, but somehow it didn't happen.  The 6"-7" of ice we were on went to slush in 2 hours time. :-\

Would have been off of three mile, but I couldn't get on there the launch was so jammed with people there was no room to park.

The few people I spoke with were there because of the reports of good ice on here.

Why dont we try 6 fishermen went through the ice on saturday, with some being forced to run their butt's off to the otherside of the lake to escape.

People, I don't know how many times in the past 2 weeks I have said to stay off of Otsego Lake.

I am so glad nobody was killed and you are all alright. Thank God !

Looks like Iceshanty.com got some media attention up here.

Access to Otsego Lake’s Three Mile Point has been blocked after several fishermen broke through the ice Saturday.

Cooperstown Fire Chief Jim Tallman said no one was injured during a series of incidents in the afternoon after daytime highs reached into the 50s.

One man was taken to Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for observation but was later released, fire officials said.

Assistant Chief Brian Clancy said there were three groups of fishermen, totaling about 18 people, on the ice off Three Mile Point on Saturday when the ice began "honeycombing." Honeycombing occurs when radiant heat from the sun creates fractures in the ice.

Clancy said a man initially fell through the ice at about 3:30 p.m., but he was rescued by his fellow fishermen before firefighters arrived on the scene.

"They were probably a hundred yards off shore," Clancy said.

The waters off Three Mile Point are more than 100 feet deep, and the dropoff begins within 20 yards of shore.

Fishermen at the scene told firefighters that as many as six people had fallen in as the ice began to deteriorate, Clancy said.

They all managed to get out on their own or were rescued by fellow fishermen, Clancy said.

Fishing reports at iceshanty.com indicate ice levels in Otsego Lake this weekend fluctuated between 10 inches to a few inches on the nine mile long lake.

Clancy said the Milford Fire Department was called in so its hovercraft could be used to warn others on the lake of the conditions and be available in case any others fell through.

Some of the fishermen had to walk to the opposite side of the lake to be driven by firefighters back to their cars at the Three Mile Point parking lot. Three Mile Point is a popular public area three miles north of the village of Cooperstown.

Clancy, who also serves as the superintendent of the Cooperstown Public Works Department, said village officials decided to close and lock the gate at Three Mile Point to prevent other fishermen from accessing the lake.

The closure would be for the season unless there is a substantial cold snap, he said.

"We really haven’t had much of a winter," Clancy said.

I too have been saying the ice is  not that safe  But i guess all people need to hear is form one guy that theres 10" of ice out there. After I heard that I replied saying yeah were he measured it. If you dont drive by the lake everyday to get to work as the ice is forming then you have  no clue whats going on out there.

fishingking, I was at 3 mile on last Thursday to do a report on the lake. As I was there the public works dept was also. It was raining like cats and dogs and the temps where pushing into the 50's. There was one crazy person all the way out in the middle all by theirself in a shanty. The publics work crew and I just looked at each other and shook our heads in disbelief. I wasnt even going out 10 yards onto that ice to drill a test hole. Thats how bad it was.

i was in the group with all the people falling through.

the problem was there was 6-8 inches of solid ice all across the lake till noon when all but 30 people left.  two hours later,  there was still 6-8 inches but honey combed entirely thru which none of us had ever imagined possible- the "6-8 inches of ice"  couldn't even hold an average fisherman.

i have included a picture:

these foot steps punched through running to a flag.
