Creative, but in NY that would be considered "jugging" which is illegal. Hope it's legal in Massachusetts.

big difference is being limited to two lines per person open water.   other than that, we didn't see anything to prohibit it

Really?  We saw people using similar devices (nor'easters) at wachusett.   Bigpick - can you point me to rule?   EP had no problem with it cuz we only fished two lines and attended gear.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

granted this was maine but I saw this on north woods law once. they were drifting one down a river in some tournament and they said because no one was in "direct control" of the line that it was illegal.
we've always joked of trying this but never did, looked like fun. nice job making the best of this winter anyways!

Section 53. A person shall not fish with floats, otherwise known as toggle fishing, in any inland water of the commonwealth. For the purposes of this section, a ''float'' shall mean any device floating with a line and hook attached, baited with natural or artificial bait and not under the direct control of the hand of the person fishing.

I have tried floating tipups in a similar way but honestly it was a PITA. I'd rather put out a shiner on a bobber and take casts with the 2nd rod. Funny stuff though.

Had it covered - See the line with bobber?   That was our tether.   We weren't just letting the things float across the pond

Missed the bobber, looks like fun and way to cover it. Looks like your son had a great time too

Just something stupid to do because we missed seeing the spinning spool under a tip up.   No appreciable ice for two straight years for us in SE Mass.  We are truly suffering

It's been pretty bad up here in the merrimac valley too, maybe we'll luck out and have a cold February

Necessity is the mother of invention.  A+ for ingenuity!
Since the ice isn't safe on my local pond; I wanted to do some open water fishing in my Kayak today, but the pond  didn't have enough open water;.......very frustrating
The charm of fishing is that it
is the pursuit of what is elusive
but attainable, a perpetual series
of occasions for hope.  - John Buchan -

Hahaha, that's awesome. Unfortunately I can't even do that right now. There's just enough ice so I can't cast but not even remotely enough to get on.

While traps are set on the ice nobody is in control of the device until the person touches it. The same thing with a fishing rod when on a rod holder shore fishing

I had the same thoughts myself and that is why I remembered that episode. thought it made zero sense.
This law seems to state the same thing btw...

"Section 53. A person shall not fish with floats, otherwise known as toggle fishing, in any inland water of the commonwealth. For the purposes of this section, a ''float'' shall mean any device floating with a line and hook attached, baited with natural or artificial bait and not under the direct control of the hand of the person fishing."
