perm 6x8 runner ideas?
« on: Dec 08, 2016, 08:22 PM »
For all you permanent ice shack experts! My 6x8 shack is currently affixed with 2x8 treated runners sandwiched and lagged into the 2x4 frame. It was a last minute solution to get it on the ice last season. Now up here in the UP of Michigan we get a lot of snow, so we are always blocking our shacks up to prevent sinking into the ice, but with the 2x8's I'm sitting too high off the ice for my liking. I need more ideas for a runner set up that can be removed after I pull it out on the ice.

I've thought of hinged ideas where I can fold the runners up essentially. Or a separate sled idea but wonder about fastening the shack to the runner sled while transporting. Cause once I get set on my spot we generally stay put all season... Any ideas or pictures are appreciated!

Here's my idea, call it a work in progress. I'm in the same situation as you, a lot of snow in Northern Maine. I built my first permy this year so I am not an expert but I've been around a few. Chiseled out the ice around many in March, PITA. My thought process is similar to yours, build a sled to get it on/off or when I want to move it which may be only once a year. Hi-lift or 2 with blocks will be needed. Mind you I have not tried it yet and I'm open to suggestions as well. Disregard the trailer, from the ground up I used garage door molding for the surface contact area. 5.5" wide I believe. Fairly slick sheen on it and I pieced it together from another project. Not too pricey at lowe's or HD and it bends ok when warm. 2x6 laid flat with a 45° to prevent slush build up... I hope. 2x8 straight up on that with rough cut 2x4's for cross members then tied in with advantech OSB about 12" wide to help tie it all in and give it stability. I still need to stack 2-2x4's on either end of the OSB and tie a rope or hitch to that. My shack is 7x8. I built the sled to fit my 4x8 trailer. I would like to have it wider but this will give me a chance to block up the corners and pull the sled out from under it. Plan on putting hooks on the shack and the sled and ratchet it down to the opposing skis. Other than drifts it is pretty flat out there. If this doesn't work... I'm screwed.
It must be something in the water.

May want to re think the garage door striping.  It will likely break when it's cold.  Also.....I think you will have alot of weight behind that axle.....it may be a squirrly ride gojng down the road.  I have a 6x8 I built two years ago and I made my skis out of 4x6s.  I took a piece of 8" wide by 1/2" polymer and screwed it to the bottom.  If the snow is packed hard I can easily push it by hand.  Only issue with it is when there is no snow an I am trying to get it down to the lake.....was thinking of trying to figure a way of affixing an axle.

Build a set of skis and use 3'' angle iron to attach the shack to the skis with lags on each corner of the shack.  No need for over kill if you plan on jacking the shack and pulling the skis out when you get where you want...the angle iron with a few 3'' lags should work fine.  I think I would use 2x10's to help reduce plowing snow since height wont matter on your skis.  You can keep the angle iron on the shack and remove the lags that are in the skis and jack it up, slide the skis out and set it on blocks.  Might be a good idea to run a few braces across the skis, connecting them together and helping to avoid twisting on ya.
Good luck...put some UHMW on the skis for runners to ;)

That door molding is pretty rugged, although I suppose it could break. I do have some high density polymer I could have used but the strips are only 3" wide. If the molding breaks I'll use those and double them side by side. Oh yea it will be squirrly on that trailer, realistically it is only going down the road a few miles, top speed probably be 15-20 mph. Drag the shack itself on the lake for a half mile max.
I like the idea of attaching the skis individually with angle iron and lags. Once I get the skis out though, I'm probably gonna bring them home. I'd hate to have to build another sled to transport them.

FYI, the green shack in the picture was 6x8.

I got it under, pulled it slightly uphill with the snosled and got it onto the trailer with a come-a-long. Posted pics for the first time with imgur. Relatively easy to get set up and photobucket's been so slow.
